2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Trey McBride

Pro's:

  • Most complete tight end in this year’s draft class
  • Fantastic hands and is as reliable as any other receiver in the class.
  • Has an excellent ability to come out with the ball when caught up in traffic and often comes out with the ball after taking contact.
  • A Quarterback’s best friend thanks to his size, safe hands and he can take catches above defenders head and a nice ability to bring in awkward low catches.  A natural playmaking tight end.
  • An elite level blocking ability. Previously played defensive snaps in high school and this is evident in technique and means he rarely gives up any holding calls. Huge tick box for NFL coaches.
  • Has excellent physicality and is more than willing to put his body on the line in the ground game.
  • McBride is very good at lowering the shoulder and running over defenders as though they aren’t there, this is great for helping him gain yards after the catch.
  • He has a good level of speed that makes him elusive after the catch.
  • A cool operator in tight windows and is more than willing to take contact.

Con's:

  • Yes, McBride may be working on this already as we’ve seen in the past year but he will need to continue to improve his route running abilities.
  • He has good athleticism but compared to others in the class. Yes he may have good speed and physicality but I’d like to see improvements in his explosiveness.
  • Has a tendency to look stiff when route running, tends to round off rather than offer any twitchiness – adding a convincing fake step will help in this department.

The Verdict:

“A three star recruit out of high school and only had four offers as he committed to his native Colorado State Rams. He looks set to break an unwanted trend for the Rams; he's likely to become the first tight end drafted from their program since 2014. It took a while for McBride to make an impact as he had an underwhelming freshman year, however he did have an impressive sophomore season as he hauled in 45 receptions for 560 yards and 4 touchdowns which led to him receiving first team All-Mountain honors. In the COVID shortened 2020 season McBride only played 4 games for Colorado State but he still caught 22 targets for 330 yards and 4 touchdowns, despite this he received second team All-Mountain honors and an All American honorable mention as per PFF. In McBride’s past season he has propelled himself as the clear number one tight end in this year’s class after putting up almost unheard of numbers for a tight end, amassing 1,121 yards and scoring a touchdown. He was named the John Mackey Award winner, awarded to college football’s most outstanding tight end and he became just the fifth unanimous All-American in Colorado State program history. He also received first team All-Mountain honors.”
