2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Charlie Kolar

Pro's:

  • One of the most productive Tight Ends that we have seen in college football since 2019, producing over 2000 yards in his 3 seasons with the Cyclones.
  • A lethal red zone playmaker with reliable soft hands, not dropping a target in the end zone throughout college (from 33 targets)
  • A great target for a Quarterback due to his size, hand eye coordination and timing for jump ball and contested plays.
  • He showcases good body control and tracking abilities which allow him to make catches outside of what his frame would suggest.
  • His size makes up the lack of athleticism in comparison to other prospects at the position.
  • Kolar probably has the best hands and playmaking abilities in the tight end class, another asset that makes up for his slight lack of athleticism.
  • A ‘traditional’ tight end who plays with an aggressive streak to his game which is seen in his blocking and receiver parts of his game.
  • His size allows him to bully smaller defenders with ease. He will use his strength and size to gain superior leverage.
  • Good footballing IQ, good understanding of the game allows him to know where he needs to be and will rarely get caught out position.

Con's:

  • Kolar’s notable athletic limitations which will cause concern, for instance his explosiveness can look rather static.
  • High cut frame and a limited amount of power make him appear more of an obstacle as opposed to a threatening blocker. Without the blocking prowess that NFL coaches love to see, a big question mark is whether he can carry on his college success on to the big stage against far superior opposition.
  • His lack of speed limits his yards after catch ability, additionally he can look a little rigid as a route runner due to his limited flexibility and burst of speed.

The Verdict:

“A three star recruit out of high school who made a solid start for the Iowa State Cyclones as he amassed 137 yards in the air and 3 scores. Followed that up with an impressive sophomore season as he hauled in 51 targets for 697 yards and 7 touchdowns. In the shortened COVID disrupted season he continued to impress having 591 yards in the air and tapping in to the end zone 7 times. Kolar contemplated declaring for the NFL Draft last season however he opted to commit to Iowa for a further year. It proved to be a good choice for his draft stock as he had seen career highs for receptions and yardage (62 receptions for 756 yards) whilst scoring 6 touchdowns. An impressive college career which had seen Kolar labeled as the most productive tight end since 2019, led him to honors such as second-team Big 12 honors in his freshman year and first-team honors in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He was a William V. Campbell Trophy winner this past season, awarded to the most academic athlete in college football."
