2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Bo Melton

Film Watched: Michigan 2021, Wisconsin 2021

Pro's:

  • Impressive burst. Lightning off the snap and attacks his route stem
  • Wins early in the route with a varied release package and quick footwork
  • Quick acceleration when free of contact sees him widen the distance from the defender
  • Impressive tracker of the football in the air, & bends his route nicely to adjust to the ball
  • Good, reliable hands, and has some circus catches on tape
  • Lethal with the ball in his hand – elusive and determined to gain more yards & find paydirt
  • Versatile. Lined up in the backfield for Rutgers, and brings impact value as a returner on special teams
  • Had a very impressive Senior Bowl, & silenced doubts over his long speed with a 4.34 forty time at the Combine

Con's:

  • Lack of play strength. Particularly noticeable on contested catches where he can be bullied
  • Short stature with limited length limit his projection as an outside receiver in the NFL
  • Release inhibited by aggressive press coverage, knocking him off his route timing
  • For every jaw dropping catch there’s a frustrating concentration drop
  • Dedicated blocker but struggles to open outside lanes in the run game
  • Agility shown with the ball in his hand not seen on breaks at the top of his routes

The Verdict:

“Bo Melton has had a very good buildup to the NFL Draft, starting with some impressive training sessions at the Senior Bowl before dispelling some untruths about his speed at the NFL Combine. Melton is battling the numbers when it comes to his size, and despite his ability to uncover on sideline routes is likely to be considered a slot receiver at the next level - where he’ll also be less likely to have someone try and jam him at the line of scrimmage. To convince a team he’s worthy of a roster spot you’ll want to see improved focus and technique in his route running, but Melton’s trump card that likely sees him drafted on day three is his special teams prowess. A playmaker with good vision and agility in tight spaces, the former Rutgers Knight might be considered as a returner first and foremost, with bonus value as a depth receiver to boot.”
