CPP #233: The Whiff Of Dubiousness

By Simon Carroll

The Collapsing Pocket Podcast has been a staple part of many a UK NFL fan’s life since late 2016. Chewing the fat on all things football and many more subjects besides, it takes a distinctly lighthearted approach to the sport we love.

In episode 233, Rob, Si & Sam discuss a range of issues, including Phil Collins’ hair denial, a footballer you wouldn’t pick a fight with in the delicatessen section of Harvey Nichols, and the 1994 fashion sense of Jorge Campos, Oh, and they talk a little bit of ‘ball too:

CPP #233: The Whiff Of Dubiousness

Please note, despite the three of them being raised well and growing up with very attentive mothers, the Collapsing Pocket Podcast is hosted by three working class northerners and is very much ‘not safe for work’. This podcast contains as much explicit language as it does ludicrous opinon.

Julio: Tennessee Bound

A week late? Perhaps. Welcome to the Collapsing Pocket folks. But the boys chat about the Titans’ trade for Julio Jones and what it means for Tennessee, The Falcons, and of course the five time All-Pro himself. Was the compensation just? Can Julio get a ring in Nashville? And did anyone know his real name is Quintorris? All the big questions answered and more…

Race Norming

"Learning that the NFL - in 2021 - was still using this unjust and subconsciously racist practice to determine disproportionate payouts to former players leaves me sick to my stomach."

Now on to something serious. The lads were rather stunned to learn this last week that the league – as part of their billion dollar concussion settlement program – had been attempting to compensate former African-American players lower amounts of remuneration by assuming they started out with ‘lower cognitive function’ than white footballers.

This is a complicated issue that stems back to the days of integration when America rather clumsily determined the reason for the falloff in educational success from white students to those of ethnic minorites was down to nature rather than societal discrimination and disadvantage. But the sheer fact this ill-educated stance was still in force in 2021 was a shock to us all.

The Guardian will explain it much better than us at the CPP ever could, but whilst we are grateful the practice has been abolished, it is a stark reminder at how far we still have to go before we reach a fair and just society. The NFL should be taking a leading role in that change, not catching up.

What Wentz Wrong?

As part of ther offseason series, the CPP boys take four teams and determine what went wrong in 2020, even if nothing actually went wrong at all. Bear wih us folks – they’ll fnd something for each of your franchises to be worried about…

The headline act this week is of course the Philadelphia Eagles. Four wins fell well short of expectation, and this football club can count their lucky stars that the Philly faithful weren’t in ‘The Linc’ to voice their opinion on the matter. From Wentz to Pederson, Howie to Hurts – they leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of the truth, and what it means for the Eagles heading into 2021…

Also under the microscope this week are The Cowboys, Cardinals and Raiders. Did Jerry hire Mike McCarthy or Mick McCarthy? Is Kliff Kingsbury an impostor or the real deal? And does Jon Gruden still have the mojo to make the Raiders great again? As always, we can’t promise you they came up with the correct answers, but the CPP had plenty of fun trying to find out. Enjoy!
