Film Watched: Western Michigan 2020, Central Michigan 2020, Senior Bowl

Pro's:

  • Size-length-speed prospect with all the measurables to be an NFL safety
  • Physical safety, with power running through his body. When he hits, HE HITS
  • Built to be a box safety – thrives coming downhill and meeting ball carriers
  • Fends off downblocks with ease – length discards attention and frees him to make the tackle
  • Has the wingspan to swallow running backs outside his frame
  • Has impressive quickness to mirror slot receivers and flip hips through transitions
  • Good burst from his landmark in zone coverage to converge on the football
  • Has the range to cover the whole of the deep field as a single-high safety

Con's:

  • Could play with more intimidation and aggression. More ‘quietly physical’ than imposing
  • Doesn’t possess the ball skills his proficiency as a cover safety deserves – just 2 interceptions in 51 games
  • Takes questionable angles of pursuit, although speed often gets him out of trouble
  • Lack of anticipation – needs to see plays develop before he believes it
  • Play diagnosis and routes recognition – particularly combo routes – underdeveloped

The Verdict:

“Quick, rangy and built like a boxer, Tycen Anderson will be a prospect that scouts will continue to scour the tape for clues until the draft rolls round. His measurements and athletic profile are intriguing, but you do feel a little short changed watching him - Anderson could be dominant around the line of scrimmage but never seems to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Conversely, he shows much better movement in coverage than you’d expect, but the instincts aren’t quite heightened enough to trust him with a big portfolio of work as a high safety. Anderson projects best as a strong safety who can aid run support and erase the short passing game over the middle. Traits will win out and a team will be sold on what he can be - but I’d suggest his current status is closer to backup material rather than starter.”
