2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Joseph_5MJ3892

Film Watched: Nebraska 2021, Virginia 2021, Penn State 2021

Pro's:

  • Quick safety that came on leaps and bounds in his one season as a starter in Illinois
  • Tremendous length. Long arms a big factor in the ball playing skills he showed in 2021
  • Comfortable in space, smoothly dropping back into his zone and reaching his landmarks
  • Agile, and able to cover all areas of responsibility to close on the football
  • Impressed with his ability to shadow slot receivers – nice transitions to flip hips and chase
  • Takes good angles to the football and intuitively shrinks passing lanes with body control
  • Playmaking skills to flip momentum of games – five interceptions in his final year in Champaign
  • Impressive wingspan allows him to corral ball carriers outside of his frame

Con's:

  • Doesn’t play with an alpha-dog mentality
  • Form tackler, but hits don’t leave a mark on their opponent
  • Doesn’t bring the physicality to operate down in the box
  • Instincts still developing; a little slow to process and click & close to the football

The Verdict:

“Kerby Joseph might not be the most well-rounded safety to come out of this draft class; with only one year as a starter under his belt it’s kind of expected. Joseph is only beginning to learn the nuances of the position and trust himself to make the right choice early on a play. But there’s no denying he’s a natural at the position - with quick feet and good coverage ability, Joseph has already demonstrated an ability to man the deep field, even in a single-high role. Despite his processing being a tick slow, he’s able to recover, converge on the catch point and use his length to make plays on the football - and he’ll only get better at that the more he plays. There’s fair questions about his physicality and dedication in the run game, but you’re not getting the best out of Joseph if you’re asking him to come downfield. A project, but plenty to work with - Joseph is a day three prospect with potential future starter ability.”
