- Excellent core strength; has bulldozer capability to move blockers at will
- Impressive burst out of his stance, and engages contact with opponent before they’re ready
- Keeps his pads low and is able to drive up into contact
- Brutal hands when they hit home. Blockers struggle to recover if he gets into their pads
- Able to get himself off blocks and attack the football consistently
- Will fight through a rep to remain relevant on a play
Con's:
- Stiff. More effective when taking on blocks vertically than on any stretch or outside run plays
- Two-gapping not his forte; can stack and shed but shifty ball carriers can challenge his fluidity with late lane changes
- Inconsistent hand placement; low and lethargic
- Little to no pass rush moves, and doesn’t have the gap-shooting ability to attack the pocket
- Just half a sack in his collegiate career
The Verdict:
“Tayland Humphrey is a true creator of chaos at the heart of a defensive line. Working his way from JuCo to FIU and finally to Louisiana, Humphrey found a home as a nose tackle in the Ragin Cajun’s three man front, becoming the run-stuffing behemoth that allowed this unit to shine. There’s absolutely no doubt that Humphrey is a one-dimensional prospect - trying to get any interior pass rush out of him is like asking me to pass an Irish bar and not get a Guinness. He’s got fair direct movement off the line of scrimmage but no way of softening the edges of blockers, and is more likely to squeeze the pocket than infiltrate it. He also won’t attract admirers for his work against zone blocking schemes, keeping his draft stock marginal. But he’ll be given an opportunity to impress at training camp at the very least.”
