- Good burst and excellent foot speed once on the move
- Keeps his pads low and plays with excellent balance and leverage – totally in control of his body
- Able to hunt down from the backside of plays
- Smart instincts; has a feel for where the ball is going, even when up against misdirection
- Feels in control of engagement; able to shed when needed and keep off blocks when desired
- Some surprising anchor when facing downblocks or double teams
- Able to shoot gaps with good timing and arm usage when tasked with rushing the QB
- Productive in the backfield – 16 sacks from the interior during his five years in Myrtle Beach
Con's:
- Not the most fluid, and will get caught out when he needs to change direction quickly
- Upper body strength a question mark – speed to power transfer doesn’t always hit home
- Hands are accurate and clever, but don’t deliver the blow to rock an offensive lineman
- Doesn’t have the power to forklift blockers out of the way
- Lets ball carriers through his grasp when tackling at full extension
The Verdict:
“An extremely productive interior lineman for the Chanticleers, CJ Brewer departs Coastal Carolina with 56 games under his belt. In that time, Brewer has recorded 141 tackles, 32 TFL’s, 16 sacks, 6 passes defended, 5 forced fumbles (3 recoveries), an interception, and even ran for a first down on a fake punt as a super senior. An enjoyable watch, Brewer has some traits that will translate to the pro level, notably good quickness off the line of scrimmage, a nose for the backfield and the propensity to make a play once he gets there. He’ll need to get bigger if he wants to be considered more than just an interior pass rusher on third down, and that could compromise his speed. But as a late round draft pick he might be an attractive option for a team with a 4-3 defense looking for some more pocket pressure on the inside.”
