2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Film Watched: Auburn 2021, Missouri 2021, Florida 2021

Pro's:

  • Move tight end that made the jump from the FCS to the SEC and shined in a suspect offense
  • Intelligent, adaptable receiver, who times runs and catches well and finds soft zones to sit in
  • Trusts his coaching as a router runner, attacking the hip of the defender and being patient for the separation
  • Confident pass catcher who loves to maintain his speed through the reception and get upfield
  • Brings physicality at the catch point, and isn’t afraid of contact with the ball in his hand
  • Enjoys blocking on the move, getting to the second level on screens and outside zone runs
  • Versatile weapon, able to align as the traditional Y, flexed out or in the backfield
  • Has the demeanour to be a special teams asset

Con's:

  • Not explosive off the line of scrimmage, but works hard to close distance on opponent quickly
  • Lacking long speed, and primarily works the short and intermediate field only
  • A little stiff; relies on timing rather than twitch to get separation on his routes
  • Lack of length gives him a smaller than desired catch radius – less room for QB error
  • Short arms a detriment to pass blocking, where he was seldom given responsibility
  • Fares less well as an inline blocker on power runs than he does on the move

The Verdict:

“Nick Muse handled a step up in competition very well, particularly when you consider the constant flux that South Carolina has endured at the quarterback position the last few years. As a reliable pass catching tight end in the short to intermediate areas, Muse is a trustworthy outlet for his QB and more often than not will move the sticks when working the middle of the field. He plays strong with the ball in hand, but doesn’t quite have the size or power to be a true factor as a traditional blocker, and with capped athleticism won’t be the diverse weapon that NFL teams look for in the modern game. As it stands, he won’t be tasked with any pass protection duties, and will be coming off the field if it’s third and long, but he’s a toolsy tight end that has enough of a rounded skillset to be a depth option and special teams contributor at the next level.”
