2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Film Watched: Georgia 2021, BYU 2021

Pro's:

  • Former wide receiver convert with a refined route tree
  • Natural pass catcher, with some impressive sideline grabs and one-handed snags
  • Versatile in the passing game; line him up where you want and watch him get open
  • Elite speed as a tight end, and will challenge defenses at all three levels on the field
  • Impressive route adjustments to accommodate the flight of the football
  • Will outrun linebackers and some DB’s with the ball in his hands
  • Read and react ability with blitz pickup duties as a h-back
  • Added ‘redzone weapon’ to his resume as a super senior, with 10 TD’s in his final season at UAB

Con's:

  • Still adding mass to his frame following the switch of position
  • Brings effort and commitment as a run blocker but not the requisite power to displace
  • Lack of effectiveness as a pass protector – merely delays a rusher’s progress rather than negate it
  • Examples of being disrupted and knocked out of stride by man coverage early on routes
  • One season wonder? Just 14 catches for less than 130 yards from 2018-2020

The Verdict:

“Talk about high upside; Gerrit Prince came into the 2021 season as an afterthought on his own team’s offense, let alone the conference or as a draft prospect. Thirteen games later he’s racked up 700 receiving yards and double digit touchdowns and attended the Shrine Bowl. Prince’s ascension is well deserved; an excellent pass catcher who knows how to use his speed and agility to get uncovered on his routes and is lethal with the ball in space, he brings receiver intangibles to the tight end position. Prince faces challenges in pass protection, with his role reduced to being a chip blocker - and he’ll always be fighting his lack of mass as a run blocker despite the effort and attention to detail. For a pass-happy offense that has a healthy volume of 2TE sets, Prince could be a very attractive proposition early on day three.”
