2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Peters

Film Watched: Wisconsin 2020, California 2019, Michigan State 2019

Pro's:

  • Big, strong, athletic quarterback who can move the chains with his legs when necessary
  • Tough runner, willing to do what it takes to make the line to gain
  • Proficient in the RPO game; strings out the mesh point, reads the defender, and makes the correct decision
  • Happy to throw the ball away and fight for another day if he sees the play is doomed
  • Excellent throwing mechanics; vertical arm, plants his feet, shoots from his hips
  • Able to deliver a nice strike when his pocket is kept clean and he has time
  • Works the middle of the field well, with noted jump in accuracy on crossing routes

Con's:

  • Subpar arm strength – rears its ugly head on anything remotely beyond intermediate throws
  • Accuracy far from NFL standard, can be described as woeful on sideline passes
  • Fails to give is receivers the opportunity for YAC with throws behind them or into the body
  • Deeper shots outside the numbers thrown with an air of hope rather than conviction
  • Lack of internal clock – poor awareness from the blind side and has taken some rough sacks
  • Pats the football twice before every pass thrown from the pocket
  • Huge windup when he has to put some mustard on a deep throw
  • Impressed with his determination to extend plays, but sometimes too keen to escape pocket

The Verdict:

“After failing to win the job for the Wolverines, Brandon Peters left Michigan and headed elsewhere in the Big 10. Illinois benefitted from Peters’ high level of competitiveness without really having the stats to show for it - the most yards thrown in a season was just 1,884, his first campaign in Champaign. Since then COVID, injury and form have seen the production fall off, and most alarmingly is that in his final year in Illinois Peters didn’t scramble for a single yard - something I felt was one of his best attributes on tape. His technique and leadership traits show a prospect dedicated to their craft, but ultimately he lacks the tools to make an impact in the NFL.”
