Monday Night Football Preview: Rams and Bills Ready for Another SoFi Shootout
By Simon Carroll
The Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams meet under the Monday Night Football lights with both teams looking to strengthen their Super Bowl credentials. Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford headline a matchup packed with offensive firepower, but the outcome could hinge on which defense can force the other into costly mistakes.
There are plenty of reasons to stay up for this one. Buffalo arrives in California looking to bounce back from its first defeat of the season, while the Rams will hope their dramatic comeback against Philadelphia last week marks the beginning of a more consistent run of form.
With two former MVP quarterbacks, an intriguing battle between elite receiving talent and a potentially decisive turnover battle, Week 5’s primetime finale has all the ingredients for a classic.
And if you’re looking to add another dimension to the action, Boyle Sports has a 50% Bet Builder Boost available for Rams vs Bills, alongside a new-customer offer worth £30 in free bets when you join and bet £10.
Josh Allen vs Matthew Stafford: Two MVPs, Two Different Challenges

Few quarterback matchups offer quite the same contrast as Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford. Both have reached the summit of the sport, but their teams arrive at SoFi Stadium with very different questions to answer.
Allen remains the driving force behind a Buffalo offense that has averaged 31.8 points per game through its opening four contests, the best mark in the NFL. His ability to punish defenses as both a passer and a runner makes him one of the league’s most difficult players to contain, particularly when a play breaks down and he starts creating opportunities outside the structure of the offense.
However, Buffalo’s attack has lost some of its early-season rhythm. After opening the campaign with consecutive victories, the Bills have found the going tougher against the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots. Their 29-26 defeat to New England last week was particularly frustrating, with Allen’s late interception proving costly.
The Rams will be looking to exploit those recent issues, although containing Allen is easier said than done. His previous meeting with Los Angeles remains fresh in the memory: in December 2024, he threw three touchdown passes and ran for another three scores in a remarkable individual performance. Buffalo still lost 44-42, underlining just how difficult it can be to win a shootout against the Rams.
Stafford, meanwhile, has had a more complicated start to the season. His six touchdown passes are matched by six interceptions, a ratio that will concern Sean McVay, particularly against an opponent capable of turning mistakes into points. Yet Stafford has already thrown for 1,189 yards, and his experience gives Los Angeles a quarterback capable of exploiting even the smallest defensive lapse.
The question is whether Stafford can deliver the big plays without giving Buffalo opportunities of its own. Against Allen, even one careless decision could prove decisive.
Puka Nacua and Davante Adams Could Give Buffalo Plenty to Think About

Buffalo’s defensive struggles have become increasingly difficult to ignore. The Bills have allowed 29 points in each of their last two games, and their problems in coverage could become particularly costly against a Rams offense loaded with receiving talent.
Puka Nacua’s return from injury provided an immediate boost against Philadelphia. He caught nine passes for 125 yards and added a rushing touchdown, reminding everyone just how difficult he is to handle when Stafford can get him the ball in space.
Davante Adams provides a very different challenge. His route-running and ability to create separation make him a dangerous option at every level of the field, while his presence prevents defenses from concentrating all their attention on Nacua. Adams has already recorded 390 receiving yards this season, giving Stafford another reliable target capable of producing explosive plays.
That combination could be particularly problematic for a Buffalo secondary dealing with injury concerns. Cornerbacks Christian Benford and Dee Alford have both been dealing with issues during the build-up, leaving the Bills with some important decisions to make before kickoff.
There is another weapon in McVay’s arsenal, too: running back Kyren Williams.
Williams has been productive on the ground, but his contribution against Philadelphia demonstrated just how valuable he can be as a receiver. He caught 10 passes for 67 yards, giving Stafford an effective outlet when the pocket becomes uncomfortable and forcing opposing defenses to account for him in multiple situations.
The Rams have averaged 417 yards per game, the second-best mark in the league, so their offensive production is hardly dependent on one player. If Buffalo cannot consistently pressure Stafford while maintaining coverage discipline, Los Angeles has the personnel to make it a very long evening for the visitors.
The Turnover Battle Could Decide Monday Night Football

For all the attention on the quarterbacks and their supporting casts, this game may ultimately come down to which team takes better care of the football.
Buffalo’s offense remains among the league’s most productive, but Allen has been responsible for five of the team’s seven turnovers across its last two games. That is a significant concern against a Rams defense that has shown an ability to make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks.
Los Angeles has its own issues to resolve. Stafford has thrown six interceptions in four games, while the Rams’ overall turnover differential stands at minus-five. Those numbers are difficult to ignore when facing an offense capable of scoring quickly and punishing mistakes.
There is encouragement for McVay’s side, however. The Rams’ 24-20 victory over Philadelphia last week demonstrated their ability to stay in a game even when things are not going to plan. They trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter before Williams scored twice in the final four minutes to complete the comeback.
Perhaps more impressively, Los Angeles outgained Philadelphia by 243 yards, finishing with 415 compared with the Eagles’ 172. That suggests the Rams’ underlying performance was considerably stronger than the narrow scoreline might indicate.
The challenge now is turning that production into a cleaner performance. Stafford cannot afford to hand Buffalo short fields, while the Rams’ defense must find ways to disrupt Allen without leaving gaps for him to exploit.
For Buffalo, the priority is getting back to the controlled, efficient offense that made such an impressive start to the campaign. James Cook has already rushed for 421 yards, providing a reliable alternative to Allen’s playmaking and giving the Bills a route to controlling the tempo.
If Buffalo can establish the run and keep Allen out of difficult passing situations, it has every chance of taking control. If the Rams force the Bills into another turnover-heavy performance, the balance could quickly shift.
Neither team needs much encouragement to turn this into a shootout. The key will be knowing when not to.
