Giant Move from the Bengals as Sexy Dexy Heads to Cincinnati

By Evan Copeland

Just days before the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, the Cincinnati Bengals have stunned the NFL with a blockbuster trade, seeing superstar Defensive Tackle Dexter Lawrence move from the New York Giants in exchange for the 10th overall pick.

The Giants now possess two top ten selections in Thursday’s first round, while Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase have finally been given the defensive lynchpin they have been craving.

Having been involved in a contract dispute with Joe Schoen and the New York front office, the three-time Pro Bowler requested a trade just under two weeks before the trade was finalised.

The move is seen as a ‘win win’ for all parties, with the Bengals adding a key piece to their defense, while new Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh has two high first round draft picks at his disposal to shape the team into playoff contenders.

Finally a Defensive Upgrade - Can the Bengals now Challenge?

Some may argue the Bengals paid over the odds for Lawrence. He is currently 28 and has taken his three-year $70 million salary over from New York, ranking second among DTs in contract value behind only Chris Jones. The team could have used the 10th overall pick to draft a defensive superstar of the future, with the likes of Caleb Downs and Mansoor Delane on the board as cut-price selections.

This is also an organisation that does not make these moves often. Cincinnati have made a first-round pick in every NFL draft since 1989, using those selections to draft the likes of Burrow and Chase since the turn of the decade. So, why make the splash now?

When looking at an offense considered among the league’s elite, which features 2024 triple crown winner Chase and with Burrow at the helm, the team has the potential for a deep playoff run if the defense plays its part. After losing Trey Hendrickson in free agency, Lawrence provides a major upgrade to a depleted defensive line and will hope to elevate the Bengals back into contention.

Burrow remains the only active AFC Quarterback to defeat the imperious Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, something former MVPs Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have failed to do so far. If the two-time Comeback Player of the Year can stay healthy and on form, the Bengals will give themselves very chance of a second AFC Championship with this major defensive upgrade.

Options for Schoen & Harbaugh - Which Route Will They Choose?

With the Raiders appearing certain to take Fernando Mendoza and ruling the intrigue out of the number one overall pick, this trade makes the Giants the team to watch on Thursday night, with the front office having multiple options on the table in the first round.

There is no doubt that Big Blue have lost a key piece on defense. Lawrence totalled 14 sacks and 19 tackles for loss over the last three seasons, along with 108 QB pressures since 2022 (a position high).

However, the front four remains one of the Giants biggest strengths, led by last year’s first round pick Abdul Carter and three-time Pro Bowler Brian Burns. When you add in the fact that New York have freed up a reported $13 million in cap space and the Giants have put themselves in a strong position.

Looking ahead to Thursday’s first round, which will see the team make their 10th and 11th top ten draft pick since 2015, if they maintain both selections. With a franchise QB provisionally secured in Jaxson Dart, Harbaugh and GM Joe Schoen can focus on developing the team around him, in what is an extremely deep talent pool on both sides of the football.

As I alluded to before, the Giants front office has the luxury of multiple options for both draft picks, if their first-choice targets fall off the board.

Based on recent mock-drafts, I would envisage the team quickly addressing the departure of Lawrence by securing two top defensive talents, both out of Ohio State, Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs.

Styles is seen as the best pure Linebacker in the class, pairing him with Bobby Okereke would transform the middle of the front seven for John Harbaugh. Looking at Downs, who many consider one of the draft’s most elite prospects, he seems like a player teams cannot pass. His versatility will make him invaluable in any secondary and he could fall to New York at 10.

These selections are obviously contingent on teams ahead not gambling on either player, with the Tennessee one to watch on Styles, while Downs could go to Kansas City or New Orleans at nine or eight. However, the likes of Jeremiyah Love or Ruben Bain Jr. could be available at pick five, and the franchise are high on Jordan Tyson out of Arizona State to bolster their receiving core.

Whichever direction the team decide to take, the talent is available to completely transform Harbaugh’s roster, with the Giants touted by many as a team who could follow the likes of the Bears and Patriots in reaching instant success under a new coach.

There is no doubt both teams have won in this trade, along with Dexter Lawrence. Of course, the full outcome of the trade will be realised over the course of the season, but both teams are ones to watch heading into 2026 and beyond.
