CFL 'Quick Kicks': Week 15

By Chris Lawton

Welcome to week fifteen of our weekly review of each CFL game week for the 2024 season. ‘Quick Kicks’ brings you week to week news of how the games went, scores, surprises, and a general feel of ‘what we learned’ from the games.

Week Fifteen brought unexpected results across all three games, with two favourites falling and a tie. Let’s dive right in. The first game of the weekend saw the BC Lions upended comprehensively at home by the Toronto Argonauts by a score of 33-17. As the Lions had been coming into form and beaten East teams ranked higher than Toronto in back-to-back games it was no surprise to see them being pretty much a consensus pick to win at home. But it was the Argos, who had success in every phase of the game that got the dominant win moving to 7-6 and dropping the Leos to 7-7.

Having beaten BC 35-27 in week one, this marks the first time Toronto have swept BC in a two game series since 2001. Heck, it’s the first time they have won in BC since 2017 so its little wonder people weren’t picking them going in.

We noted last week that Lions running back William Stanback had been on a tear for BC. Over five games he had accumulated 637 yards from scrimmage, with 507 yards rushing and 130 yards receiving. But the Boatmen’s D stopped that here, holding him to just 6 carries for 21 yards. That really held back the Lions’ Offence and Toronto outgained them 165 yards to 62 on the ground and 423 net yards to 213 overall in the game. But they didn’t just restrict the rushing attack as they also recorded 7 sacks and held BC to just two first downs passing.

For Toronto Chad Kelly finished 18 of 28 for 268 yards and a touchdown as well as having 10 carries for 56 yards and a score. He was ably assisted by Makai Polk who had 6 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown.

On Special teams Janarion Grant returned 7 punts for 140 yards and Lirim Hajrullahu was 6 for 6 on Field Goals and had 3 kickoffs for 185 yards. Toronto really owned every phase of the game here and that was reflected in their 37:24 to 22:36 advantage when it came to time of possession.

The second game of the weekend saw another upset as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats moved to 4-9, and dropped the Ottawa RedBlacks to 8-4-1 with a relatively comfortable 37-21 home win. This was the 2024 Hall of Fame game and the inductees were celebrated at halftime.

For Hamilton, future HOF quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell led the way going 20 of 27 for 299 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 pick. Whilst in recent weeks it has been Tim White who has led the receiving corps, in this one that fell to Steven Dunbar Jr as he delivered 10 catches for 151 yards and a touchdown. To balance that out for the tabbies, Greg Bell had 15 carries for 99 yards and a score.

For Ottawa Dru Brown finished 17 of 27 for 164 yards and a pick. He was replaced in the second half by Jeramiah Masoli who did provide a spark and finished 13 of 19 for 183 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Ottawa also had two-hundred-yard receivers in Dominique Rhymes, (10 catches 129 yards and a touchdown), and Justin Hardy (8 catches 103 yards).

But, like Toronto in the previous game, Hamilton delivered in every phase. The D forced five turnovers, (three interceptions and two fumbles), led by Nick Usher who forced two fumbles including one on a strip sack.

The O-line held firm and didn’t allow a sack, and to really kickstart things Lawrence Woods III returned a punt 83 yards for a score.

The third and final game of the weekend was a 19-19 tie between the host Calgary Stampeders and visiting Montreal Alouettes. The result moved the Stamps to 4-8-1 and the Alouettes to 10-2-1. Back in Week 10 Ottawa and Saskatchewan played out the first tied game we had seen in the CFL in seven years, yet here we are just 37 days later and we have another!

For Calgary this result halts a four-game run of defeats, although they have still not won since week 8 when they were 4-4. Montreal conversely were at 10-1 and with their last two results have slipped to 10-2-1. Their matchup with Ottawa next week will be huge for both teams.

Prior to this game Montreal had been on an eight-game winning run on the road which is a franchise record. This also marks only the second tied game ever between these two teams in a series Calgary leads 43-41-2.

Calgary had good chances to win here. They started the game strong forcing a fumble on Montreal’s first offensive snap and then recovering another fumble on a kick return. They capitalised by scoring both times and took a 10-0 lead. Montreal did find their way back into it, but it was Calgary who had better field position and offensive play only to come up empty handed in the red zone. In fact, they only converted once on four trips inside the red zone and that really hurt them.

For Calgary, returning QB Jake Maier went 29 of 37 for 236 yards and a touchdown, whilst Dedrick Mills keyed the attack with 21 carries for 122 yards and Marken Michel had 6 grabs for 73 yards and a score. Reggie Begelton added 7 catches for 68 yards meaning he surpassed 400 career receptions.

Montreal did enough to stick around and could maybe have pinched it in overtime, but a tie seems like a fair result. They were able to rely on the boot of Jose Maltos who hit 4 for 4 on his filed goals, including a 53-yarder, a kick to tie it with the clock hitting zero and two overtime kicks. The Als should have felt fairly confident as he hasn’t missed a kick in his last six outings now.

A nice bonus for Montreal were the returns of receivers Kaion Julien-Grant and Tyler Snead to the passing game and each one contributed.

On the ground Walter Fletcher had 10 carries for 90 yards, and Darnell Sankey continues to ball on D hitting on 10 tackles here.

With three unexpected results hitting the CFL in week 15 it is going to be really interesting to see how the people who do the power rankings react next week. Will these be seen as trap games or part of a wider picture where there isn’t as much separation between the teams as some might think?
