Film Watched: Wisconsin 2020, Maryland 2020, Ohio State 2021
Pro's:
Record-setting veteran quarterback who helped elevate the standard at Minnesota
High IQ prospect who demonstrated total control of his offense
Ultimate coaches QB. Will slay the film room and be prepared for every contest
Fast mental processor, who works through progressions efficiently
Trusts his receivers through their routes and throws with anticipation
Play elevates when the margins shrink – excellent redzone accuracy and TD production
Has an innate feel for route combos and timing
Improved as a goalline rusher in final season, with four touchdowns on the ground
Con's:
Underwhelming arm strength
Something of a statue in the pocket; doesn’t climb or dance to avoid pressure
Won’t challenge defenses with his legs, and is sluggish to escape blitzers
Passes lose accuracy the more he tries to rip it into tight windows
Some evident hospital passes over the middle on tape
The Verdict:
“Tanner Morgan was supposed to go to Western Michigan to work with PJ Fleck, but when the coach landed the Minnesota job he took his QB recruit with him - and the rest is history. Literally - Morgan leaves the program as the winningest Gophers quarterback of all time, and set numerous records as the HC & QB combo established the school as a Big Ten contender. Morgan is one of those QB’s who you love to watch and can’t help but admire; the dedication to honing his craft jumps off the screen. There are significant limitations to his game that he’s worked tirelessly to overcome at the college level, but the NFL is less forgiving. I see Morgan on the sideline with a headset on someday, but until then I predict a job as a scout team QB is likely his ceiling as a professional quarterback.”
