2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Johnson_Tyree

Film Watched: LSU 2021, Mississippi State 2021, North Carolina 2020

Pro's:

  • Edge rusher with the tools to permeate the pocket and hunt the football
  • Explosive – has good twitch off the snap and can attack instantly from a two or three point stance
  • Has impressive dip as he challenges the corner, plays under hands and flattens the curve to the QB
  • A hard man to contain once he has the upper hand in a rep – works hard to eradicate opportunities for the blocker to reset
  • Turns burst into power at the point of contact and demonstrates good bullrush ability
  • Has surprising strength throughout his frame; will fight to get into the backfield
  • Can take angled blocks well, and rarely moved off his trajectory by heavy contact
  • Ascending prospect – sack production doubled as a senior as his rush game came together

Con's:

  • Slightly undersized, and despite competitiveness at the POA often gives up strength to his opponent
  • Bigger, longer blockers will likely keep him wrapped up if they manage to clamp on to his pads
  • Noticeable stiffness changing direction – disappointing considering his vertical speed & flexion
  • Can funnel run plays inside as an edge setter, but unable to hold contact and two-gap
  • Needs to develop some pass rush combos and counters when Plan A fails

The Verdict:

“Tyree Johnson is a fun watch. A true street fighter, Johnson will kick and scream on every snap to make an effective play on the football, and as a pass rusher has the tools to cause offensive lines serious consternation. He attacks the edge like he’s been fired out of a cannon, and has the dip and ankle flexion to swoop around the corner and get to the quarterback. Johnson knows how to shut out blockers once they’ve ceded the advantage to him, which makes his stiffness a real disappointment because he’d be the ultimate pocket penetrator if he had outside to inside moves at his disposal. Johnson has issues matching power when it comes to run defending, and unless he gets a little more sand in his pants will likely be considered a designated pass rusher at the next level. But there is upside to tap into here.”
