2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Ben Stille

Film Watched: Oklahoma 2021, Minnesota 2021, Wisconsin 2018

Pro's:

  • BIG. Size and weight to be considered for interior duties as well as a 5T role in a 3-4
  • Played a lot of tackle at Nebraska and has the stout anchor you’d expect from the position
  • Superior length; able to control contact and set the edge when he gets his hands right
  • A true fighter on every play; works hard to reset and overcome adversity when losing a battle
  • When his hands land true, he is able to rock back blocks and rest the line of scrimmage favourably
  • Positional versatility – played linebacker as a freshman, as well as edge and tackle for the ‘Huskers
  • Good mental processing to be reliable from various alignments
  • Enough mobility to maintain gap integrity on the move against zone blocking schemes

Con's:

  • Not an athlete. Little explosiveness out of his stance and won’t challenge corners as a true edge rusher
  • Is he a ‘tweener? Not enough size for tackle & quicks for edge – possibly a 3-4 defensive end only
  • Clumsy hand positioning betrays the power he has at the point of contact
  • Length underutilised – wins with urgency and determination rather than technique
  • Older prospect – played five years at Nebraska and will be a 24/25 year old rookie

The Verdict:

“Ben Stille has been a presence on the Nebraska defense since before Donald Trump was President, and has always found ways to be productive despite a varying job description. Starting life out as a rush linebacker, Stille continued to add weight before moving to the defensive line and finally finding a home as a gap-shooting interior tackle. Teams will take one look at his size and length and pigeon hole him for a 3-4 end who should have the measurables to set the edge - which I think Stille can definitely do at the next level if he works on his hands. That being said, he currently has no right to command reps against the pass and his value as a depth piece on a defense is limited. His athletic profile has been marginalised as Stille got bigger - I fear he’ll have a tough time earning a paycheck after training camp.”
