Film Watched: Oregon 2021, Fresno State 2021, USC 2020
Pro's:
Cerebral safety that was asked to play various roles in five years at UCLA and was effective
Ideal size for an NFL safety
Versatile; played free, strong and nickel safety as well as hybrid linebacker for The Bruins
Football IQ jumps off the screen – awareness, positioning and instincts all elite in zone coverage
Tracks the football in the air well, and shows good timing to disturb the reception
Developed ball-playing skills as a senior – six pass breakups and three interceptions in 2021
Good fundamentals through his tackles, and rarely lets one escape his clutches
Con's:
Lacks the elite quicks to erase slot receivers or tight ends in man coverage
Doesn’t have the sideline to sideline range to operate as a single high safety
Modest length to affect the catch point against jump ball artists
Lack of play strength makes it difficult for him to free from blocks and find the ball carrier
Doesn’t send a message with his hits
The Verdict:
“The son of five-time pro bowler Carnell Lake, Quentin Lake certainly has the football gene. If football was played in your mind and not on the turf, Lake would likely be as good as his father was; the former Bruin plays the game with a high level of intuitiveness in any role asked of him - a testament to his smarts on field. The truth is that Lake’s ability to know what is coming has allowed him to mask some crippling deficiencies to his game that will be exposed at the next level. A lack of power against the run and a lack of speed against the pass usually sink pro careers, but if Lake can carve out a serious role on special teams, then his dedication to his technique and on-field discipline might allow him to make a roster. Drafted or not, Lake’s first training camp is crucial to his longevity in the league.”
