Florida transfer that had a breakout 2021 season as a pass catching tight end
Impressive measurables – all the height and size required by the NFL
Long arms and a big catch radius
Smart route runner, with the nous for adjustments to aid his quarterback
Sufficient burst off the line to cause consternation for a defense
Became a playmaker his final season at Pitt, registering 450 yards and 6 TD’s
High character guy and locker room leader
Con's:
Underwhelming ability and effort as a blocker considering his size
Plays with a high pad level and concedes leverage on engagement
Fails to use length to dominate in pass protection
Limited speed, and notable elongated acceleration
Unimpressive short-area agility, and real lethargy in and out of sharp breaks
Too many drops on tape
The Verdict:
“Not many evaluations leave you as disappointed as Lucas Krull’s does. One look at the size and length of the guy, and you assume he’s going to be a dominant inline blocker - something Florida thought they were getting when they recruited him back in 2018. But the play strength simply does not match the measurements, and a move to Pitt saw a gradual transformation to more of a flex tight end. In this role Krull has had more success, with 2021 a season that redeemed his collegiate career. But a man of his dimensions is never going to possess the speed or athleticism to challenge defenses vertically, and he is overly reliant on his football smarts to create space on intermediate routes to be a viable outlet for his QB. It will be a steep transition to the NFL, and Krull will have difficulty locking down a roster spot.”
