2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Film Watched: BYU 2021, Kanasas 2021, Shrine Bowl

Pro's:

  • Insane speed. Recorded the fastest forty time for a defensive back in combine history (4.23 seconds)
  • Never out of a play – has the quickness to recover and affect the catch
  • Big frame with plenty of muscle mass on there – not found wanting physically
  • Has the pop in his arms to reroute the receiver off the line of scrimmage
  • Click and close speed from zone to fire down to the football in the blink of an eye
  • Recognises threats to his zone and is confident in covering all outlets with his range
  • Long arms that he throws in there to impede the catch
  • Loves to compete. Never gives up on plays, and willing to fight off attention to defend the run

Con's:

  • Woeful technique across the board. Over-reliant on his speed to compensate
  • Footwork at the line of scrimmage allows receivers to open up room early in the route
  • A little stiff, and agility doesn’t match straight line speed. Mirroring receivers in off-man is clunky
  • Doesn’t utilise his length and speed to make plays on the ball, instead targeting the man
  • Tackling is a mixed bag; arm placement erratic and doesn’t drive through contact

The Verdict:

“Kalon Barnes introduced himself to draftniks with a 40 yard dash at the combine that has never been done by another defensive back before. Turn on the tape, and you see that speed in every aspect of Barnes’ game; at his best in zone coverage where he can fire downhill to the football, Barnes has rockets strapped to his cleats. Regardless of how slow he is to process, or how his technique gives his opponent a head start, you can never discount Barnes from making a play because his track speed aids his recovery. Barnes is nowhere near ready to see an NFL field, where better receivers will expose his warts. But teams will likely consider him correctable with good coaching, and with traits you can’t teach Barnes is a low-floor, high ceiling prospect who will definitely earn consideration as a late-round draft pick.”
