Pro's:

  • Physical specimen; chiselled frame with excellent weight distribution and long arms
  • Plays like his hair is on fire; blasts out of the snap and attacks vertically to get deep before contact
  • A unit to reverse momentum – keeps his legs driving through contact and uses length to dominate the engagement
  • Hands like clamps that aren’t easy to shed once they find the numbers
  • Springy – has all the lateral mobility you need to block on the move – moves like a tight end
  • Gets impressive depth to his pass sets
  • Has the circumference of a circus tent and is difficult to get beyond with a good angle
  • True positional versatility, with considerable experience at left guard and both tackle spots

Con's:

  • Slender lower half betrays his speed and upper body strength – lack of explosion from legs through contact
  • Body balance erratic; fails to keep hips square to hands and embrace contact straight on
  • Lack of sustain when lower half isn’t set correctly – hands fall off blocks
  • Struggles to keep his pads low, opting to win with length over leverage
  • In trouble if edge rushers escape his arms

The Verdict:

“Beloved by the coaching staff at Chapel Hill, Josh Ezeudu is a height-weight-speed prospect who ticks plenty of the trait requirements for the next level. Outside of maybe a lack of lower body thickness, Ezeudu possesses the size, mass, length and quicks to operate as an interior lineman at the next level, with the opportunity to cover on the outside in times of need. A permanent role as a tackle is probably ill advised; his movement outside of a phone booth is probably subpar, and he’s vulnerable to attack on his outside shoulder when his hands aren’t on time. Coaches will anticipate a period of adjustment as he works on some fundamentals - he’s got to play lower and more in control of his body - and throwing some leg days into his training regimen wouldn’t go amiss. But there’s capable NFL backup potential here.”
