2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

John Metchie

Pro's:

  • A versatile wide receiver who can play in the Z and in the slot, as seen throughout his time in Alabama.
  • Fast and explosive playmaker who can stretch the field in an instance.
  • Gives signal-callers options as he can get involved in the short passing game, he can run jet sweeps, screen and slants.
  • Has excellent speed which makes him a threat downfield, once he creates separation he will not be caught.
  • Metchie III has a nice ability to be able to put on the brakes in and out of cuts which uncovers defenders with ease.
  • Tough player that will win most of his contested catches; excellent body control, strong hands and a decent vertical help him have immense success.
  • A solid player who can gain yards after the catch due to his toughness, speed and good open field moves that he has at his disposal.
  • More than willing to dig in as a blocking wide receiver, may need slight improvement for the NFL but solid enough to get the job done sufficiently enough.
  • Honorable mention for his catching ability over his shoulder, this really is special.

Con's:

  • Metchie III could improve on using his hands better, all too often you’ll see him taking the ball in to his pads.
  • An ACL tear is somewhat of a concern.
  • He has not faced press coverage, however in the NFL it’s something he will be seeing a lot more of. This may make it harder in contested catch situations and could see him bullied off the ball by stronger defenders.

The Verdict:

“A talented receiver that came through the renowned St. James High School famed for helping Canadian Nationals break in to the US college football programs. He was a four star recruit out of high school and was awarded a scholarship from Alabama. Metchie’s freshman year was a non-starter as he competed for playing time with Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith. However, in his sophomore year we began to see what a talent Metchie is as he hauled in 55 receptions for 916 yards and 6 touchdowns. In the past season Metchie took advantage of his first year as being one of the main men for the Crimson Tide as he hauled in 96 catches for 1,142 yards and 8 touchdowns. A successful collegiate career has seen Metchie win the Jon Cornish Trophy in 2020, awarded to the most outstanding Canadian athlete in NCAA football, a title previously held by Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard. In 2020 he was a College Football Playoff National Champion as Alabama beat Ohio State. Furthermore, in the past season he received second-team All SEC honors for the first time in his career”
