2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

George-Karlaftis

Pro's:

  • Karlaftis has pretty much every attribute required to become a superstar pass rusher.
  • He is more of a traditional defensive end rather than just a pure pass rusher.
  • He plays with true grit. An exceptional competitor who plays with nastiness that makes him a rage finisher and one of the most feared defenders in college football.
  • He has an exceptional first step which is springy and explosive from a two and three point stance.
  • For a guy of his size he dips and bends well. He will often showcase his best work with a dip of the outside shoulder to get under opposing tackles.
  • Provides versatility. He can rush from two and three point stance and his speed enables him to stand up in space. Exceptional strength makes him a good bull rusher.
  • The ‘Greek Freak’ has exceptional strength. He is almost immovable and will push aside linemen, an absolute gamewrecker.
  • Considering his size he has very good athleticism. Good burst of speed, change of direction and a fluid mover.
  • Very good footballing IQ. This allows him to play with good awareness of what’s happening around him and be instinctive.

Con's:

  • Karlaftis has a lack of flexibility in his legs and ankles which prevents him from being able to fly around the outside track.
  • He needs to show signs of improvement against the run, often neutralized in the run game by opponents simply running at him.
  • He has good bend however this will need improving to continue to be effective in the NFL.

The Verdict:

“A four star recruit out of high school who opted for the Purdue Boilermakers due to family links with the university, turning down offers from elite programs. Karlaftis hit the ground running as a freshman for the Boilermakers as he racked up 54 tackles, a forced fumble and led the team with 17.0 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks. This led him to receiving second-team Big 10 and the associated press first-team freshman honors. Karlaftis’ sophomore season was disrupted by injury as he only featured twice for the Boilermakers. In the past season though he made up for lost time. Featuring for Purdue on 667 snaps as he registered 36 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles as well as 14 QB hit and an impressive 35 hurries. This led to him getting nominated as one of the five finalists for the Ted Hendricks Award, for the best defensive end in college football, and he became the first defensive player since 2012 from the Boilermakers to receive consensus first-team All-Big 10 honors”
