2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

DURANT_Decobie

Film Watched: Clemson 2021, Jackson State 2021, Shrine Bowl

Pro's:

  • Productive cornerback, with 12 interceptions and 100 solo tackles in four years at SCSU
  • Adept in all forms of coverage
  • Elite athlete. Can match the quickest of receivers, riding them hip to hip throughout the route
  • Smooth backpedal, quick in and out of transitions, and keeps separation to a minimum in man
  • Tremendous agility to operate zones and burst down to the football
  • Peeks the quarterback well and is ready to flick the switch the second the ball leaves his hand
  • Plays with a chip on his shoulder and is not found wanting when it comes to effort or aggression
  • Stepped up against elite competition; showed out against UCF (2018), USF (2019) and had two picks against Clemson (2021)

Con's:

  • Undersized. Serious lack of mass on his frame that makes competing with big receivers an uphill struggle
  • Lack of length, highlighted when challenging for jump balls
  • Short arms can see him slip off tackles
  • Struggles to get off blocks and help out in run duties
  • Risk reward cornerback who takes chances and has been exposed by misdirection on occasion

The Verdict:

“Decobie Durant is fighting through a lot of narratives in this draft process, and people recognising his talent and production show it’s beginning to pay off. Durant is small, light, and has short arms; the dreaded Bermuda triangle that usually delivers a death sentence to cornerbacks attempting to jump to the NFL. But watch his tape and you see a prospect that simply ignores his measurables and balls out. The astonishing number of interceptions shows he can compensate for a lack of length with instincts and timing, and when it’s time to be physical, Durant is more than willing to stick his head in. Normally FCS prospects come with the ‘lower standard of competition’ stigma, but Durant shined against FBS opponents, and really made a statement in the Clemson game. WIth the mental makeup to thrive as a slot corner, Durant is worthy of a late round selection.”
