2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Chase Lucas

Film Watched: Southern Utah 2021, Utah 2019, Oregon 2019

Pro's:

  • Experienced cornerback, with 51 games under his belt during his time in Tempe
  • Intuitive feel for the game – reads a defense well and has a good notion of what is coming his way
  • Technically sound; excellent footwork with a smooth backpedal and seamless transitions in man
  • Displays good timing and angles of pursuit to the catch point to disrupt the reception
  • Good length to challenge for the football
  • Comfortable with heavy traffic in zone coverage; prioritises responsibilities when tested with route combos
  • Has the versatility to align outside or in the slot
  • Team leader that coaches and teammates trusted

Con's:

  • Lightweight. Struggles to match up physically against bigger receivers
  • Ineffective when tasked with press coverage; lack of power to jam & redirect at the line of scrimmage
  • Average athletic profile disguised with quick mental processing and developed technique
  • Tackling is fundamentally sound but lacks the pop to consistently bring ball carriers to the ground
  • Ball skills dried up his final two years at Arizona State – not one interception in 2020 or 2021

The Verdict:

“Not many cornerbacks enter the NFL Draft as well seasoned and as polished as Chase Lucas. The five-year Sun Devil starter is an instinctive corner that has seen it all before and developed his game to ensure he’s in the best situation to spoil the party. Lucas’ on-field intelligence jumps off the screen; in his element in zone coverage, he is an excellent communicator with his teammates, diagnoses quickly and is prepared to break on the ball immediately. Lucas is a graceful mover but certainly not quick, and whilst he can mirror receivers to a point he won’t keep up with them throughout the entirety of the route. Man coverage is not advised, certainly not press where his lack of play strength stands out like a sore thumb. A slot corner role with plenty of zone concepts will make the most out of Lucas’ traits.”
