Film Watched: Eastern Washington 2021, Illinois State 2021, North Dakota 2021

Pro's:

  • Thick, wide offensive line prospect with experience at both tackle and guard at NDSU
  • Plays with a chip on his shoulder – borderline violent when it comes to contact engagement
  • Powerful to the point of dominance at the FCS level – impressive leg drive through contact
  • Long-limbed and heavy handed; punches to pad with a discernible ‘thud’
  • Phenomenal anchor to absorb bull rushes from the strongest defensive ends
  • Comfortable blocking in space and on the move, with sufficient wheels to get to the second level
  • Not particularly smooth, but quick enough to get set against outside speed rushers
  • Shone at the Shrine Bowl, and was recognised as practice player of the week at the all-star game

Con's:

  • Over eager for contact in pass protection; wants to feel jersey and will extend over his toes
  • Nervous about being beaten to the arc, and oversets, leaving himself vulnerable to inside counters
  • Hand placement inconsistent – sometimes low and late
  • Rather rugged kickslide; his mobility may be exposed at the NFL level
  • Bending at the waist creeps into his game as he gets tired

The Verdict:

“Something of a legend at North Dakota State, Cordell Volson enters the NFL with the reputation for being as tough as nails with the play strength and aggression to back up his mindset. If there are hard yards to be gained, Volson was the man to do it behind; a mauler in the run game, no defender was safe from being displaced in the pursuit of a first down. As he heads to the NFL, Volson’s unquestioned power will translate well to a power or gap scheme, but his shortfalls in lateral agility will have some teams wondering if he’s best served doing it from the interior of the line rather than the outside. I guess his plus length will see him tested at right tackle first, before being kicked to guard if he struggles. But this semblance of positional versatility will only help his cause as a high floor, high ceiling day three pick.”
