- Hair-trigger release, the ball coming out quick with a tight spiral
- Accurate with the football, and can throw from different platforms and arm trajectories
- Drives the football into his receivers hands
- Underappreciated mobility, and his size allows him to be a physical short-yardage runner too
- Operated an NFL style offense at Southeastern Louisiana
- Monster stats at college; 7,800 yards and 62 TD’s in the last two seasons
Con's:
- Charged with a DWI in 2017
- Arm strength a tad underwhelming on the deep shots – too many short-armed passes
- Has to see it to believe it, and won’t release the football until the receiver uncovers
- Stares down his receiver and isn’t quick to move on to alternatives if the first read isn’t there
- Internal clock a little tardy, and has nowhere to go as the pocket collapses
The Verdict:
“Cole Kelley has enjoyed some attention in the NFL Draft process based on his measurables and eye-popping production at Southeastern Louisiana the last two seasons. With accomplished upper-half mechanics, Kelley delivers a perfect spiral and his release is pleasing on the eye, and he also has the ability to move the chains with his feet, which he’s certainly not shy in doing. Kelley struggled at Arkansas before transferring to the FCS level however, and those who remember his time at Arkansas will be wary that the step up to the highest level there is will bring similar results. There’s a lot to work on, much of which is based on mental processing and will take some time to re-wire. He should get a shot through training camp, but it’s likely going to be a quiet draft weekend.”
