- Pass catching machine at College Station, amassing 118 catches for 1,500 yards in just 36 games
- Perfect tight end size and shape for the NFL
- Freakish athleticism for his size
- Adept route-runner, with plenty of agility. Crisp in and out of his breaks
- Natural hands, and can haul in passes outside of his body
- Insane catch radius
- Able to box out defenders with big strong frame
- Receiving ability to be spread around the formation
Con's:
- Run blocking a significant concern, although he showed more dedication in his final year
- Has the size to impose himself as a blocking TE, but too often disappoints in this regard
- Lack of burst off the line of scrimmage; more of a smooth accelerator into his routes
- Concentration lapses – will make an incredible catch one moment, and a silly drop the next
- Atrocious pro day – poor testing, athleticism and conditioning throughout
The Verdict:
“There’s a little ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ to Jalen Wydermyer and his projection as a tight end in the NFL; on the one hand, he has everything you want as a pass catcher - size, separation, and the catching ability a quarterback dreams of. On the other hand, his almost disinterest in blocking duties will infuriate scouts, because without serious improvement in this regard he won’t be regarded as a three-down contributor at the next level. The small steps taken as a junior lead me to believe that he can turn a corner in the run game, but until then he’s a receiving tight end with game-changing ability. Sadly, his pro day went as bad as you could possibly imagine; no tight end running a five second forty has ever been drafted. Wydermyer might just buck that trend, but his dedication is once again called into question."
