What's Hot and what's Knott - Week 1

By Rhys Knott

Preseason is finally over and after what seems to have been an interminable off-season, competitive games have finally begun.  Let’s take a look at what’s hot and what’s not this week.

Jerod Mayo, apparently. He did something that Bill Belichick didn’t manage until Week 3 last year, he won his first game of the season. And there was no sign of Drake Maye at all.

Although Mayo’s postgame press conference remarks about hoping the fans understand what he’s trying to do and how he’s focused on long-term success suggest he’s not expecting many more wins this year.

The Arrowhead turf that Xavier Worthy scorched on his way to his rushing touchdown is probably still hot four days later. Everyone knows he broke the 40-yard record at the Combine, but apparently, nobody told the Ravens defense.

Jordan Love’s knee is probably still hot too, but not in a good way. A combination of a sticky field and Jalen Carter’s 314-pound frame combined to sprain Love’s MCL. The Packers are facing between three and six weeks with Malik Willis under centre.

That might not be a problem, but the 25-year-old only arrived in Green Bay last week and he could only manage to throw one incomplete pass and take a sack on Friday. Matt LaFleur better hope Willis is a fast learner.

Chris Boswell’s foot was positively smoking in Atlanta. The 33-year-old Texan set a new franchise record as he converted three 50-plus-yard field goals. He kicked six in total and won the game for a Steelers offense that never managed to fire on all cylinders.

Saquon Barkley, when he’s healthy the 27-year-old is one of the most potent threats in the league. He’s found the endzone 50 times in his 75 games and he repaid Howie Roseman’s faith with a hat-trick in his Eagles’ debut.

What’s Knott

Not playing any of your starters in preseason is very much Knott. Protecting your most important players until the regular season kicks off might seem like a wise decision, but it means they’re anything but battle-hardened.

The Rams offensive line looked woefully undercooked and Joe Noteboom, who was playing well was carted off in the second quarter after suffering an ankle injury.

With Steve Avilla and Alaric Jackson already missing the Rams offensive line stocks are depleted just one week into the season.

The only way Isiaih Likely’s size 12 cleats are hot is if he incinerated them when he got back home. Keep off the white lines big guy, you’re not Grandmaster Flash.

The Eagles may have beaten the Packers in Sao Paolo, but there were definitely a few work-ons after the first NFL game to be played in the southern hemisphere. The biggest one was the centre-to quarterback exchange, Jalen Hurts fumbling a Cam Jurgens snap cost the Eagles a touchdown.

Two snap errors cost the Eagles 16 yards in total, good job they had a 12-hour flight home to get some practice in.

The Panthers are absolutely Knott, on Week 1’s performance they’re not anything. Conceding 47 points is never great, but when your Pro Bowl defensive tackle suffered a potentially season ending injury it’s catastrophic.

And if your offense only manages to score 10 points the alarm bells become even louder.
