With the NFL Draft approaching we will be looking at each team and evaluating where they need to improve. In this particular series we will run a seven round mock using the Pro Football Network Mock Draft Simulator and find the ‘Perfect Picks’ for each franchise.
We will highlight four players that could help each team. This will feature picks 1 and 2, a mid round gem and a late round sleeper.
When you’ve been bad as long as the Jets, the focus is not on short-term needs but on getting the right type of player. Top-10 picks have to be invested in elite players whatever the position. DJ Reed was the big offeseason addition at the spot but Gardner would be an immediate starter opposite. Long, fast and a true shutdown corner that upgrades the defense.
I know you were all expecting to see a wide receiver here. Why not, every other mock draft has the Jets going in that direction. However, the drop off at edge is much steeper than wide receiver. Jermaine Johnson has developed into a terrorizing pass rusher and would pair nicely with the returning Carl Lawson. The Jets have grabbed two defensive linchpins and still have the opportunity to find a starter at wideout in round 2.
Ashtyn Davis has struggled to convince Jets brass that he should be the long-term future at free safety. While he may start in 2022 it wouldn’t harm to take a mid-round punt on finding his replacement. With 4.36 40-yard speed JT Woods is a true rangy, center fielder. At 6’2, 193lbs he has good size and six career interceptions show his instincts as a ball-hawk.
Charleston Rambo showed flashes of his potential at Oklahoma but thought Miami would be his opportunity to break out. It was a difficult 2021 season that involved a QB transition but Rambo surpassed 1000 yards and caught seven touchdowns. He displays excellent body control and offers a true deep threat. He would add much need depth to the wide receiver room.
