With the NFL Draft approaching we will be looking at each team and evaluating where they need to improve. In this particular series we will run a seven round mock using the Pro Football Network Mock Draft Simulator and find the ‘Perfect Picks’ for each franchise.
We will highlight four players that could help each team. This will feature picks 1 and 2, a mid round gem and a late round sleeper.
The Cowboys looking for a long-term safety in the draft; a tale as old as time. Could they finally pull the trigger this year? They just might if Lewis Cine was available here. The Georgia Bulldog is often cast as a heavy-hitting thumper but he has the speed to be a competent coverage safety as well. It was a star studded defense in Athens but don’t dismiss the importance of the less heralded Cine.
Sean Rhyan played left tackle for UCLA but he projects to kick inside in the pros due to a lack of length. Either spot will suit Dallas who lost key pieces along the o-line. Connor Williams and La’el Collins departed and Rhyan is the type of mauler who could fit straight into one of the spots and restore the nasty and power that the ‘Boys lost.
Jerry Jones wouldn’t have to look too far if he plumped for SMU’s Grant Calcaterra. He is right on the Cowboys doorstep after starting his college career in Oklahoma. He has some serious health concerns having already come out of an early retirement forced by multiple concussions. When healthy, he is a physical Tight End who can block inline but also split out wide and offer a receiving threat.
Amari Cooper left the Cowboys and it leaves them a tad short-handed in the wide receiving department. Kyle Phillips could provide competition in the slot role with James Washington. Phillips impressed at the Senior Bowl with his polished route running and could perhaps be the long-term answer to a spot the Cowboys haven’t properly filled since Cole Beasley left.
