There is bad news for two star players whose season has come to an end, as well as a look ahead to the biggest game of the season so far – Bama v Georgia!
So, welcome y’all to our weekly round-up of life in the Southeastern Conference.
Here are this week’s headlines….let’s get started!
this weeks sec headlines
when injuries start to bite
Baton Rouge, LA
As bye weeks kick in, teams have the chance to rest and recover from knocks that are starting to take their toll.
However, for two players week 4 was the last action that they will see this season.
tiger trouble
LSU Tiger’s Harold Perkins has had a rough start to the season. Mirroring last year, Perkins’ play has had fans and commentators alike scratching their heads. Criticism continues to circle Brian Kelly and his coaching staff about their inability to find the best position for Perkins and not properly utilising one of the elite prospects in college football.
However, even worse news for LSU and Perkins this weekend, when the Tigers announced that his season had ended through injury. Several outlets have recirculated a report by 247 Sports that Perkins tore his ACL during Saturdays win over South Carolina.
During Monday’s LSU press conference Kelly confirmed these fears, that Perkins was finished for the season.
“Certainly an injury that we feel terrible about, especially for Harold and the work that he’s done to put himself into a great position,” Kelly said. “These are difficult, but we’ve got really good players that can come in and fill in for LSU and move forward.”
Details of the next steps for Perkins in terms or surgery and treatment have not yet been released.
This is Perkins third and potentially last year in Baton Rouge, so the injury could not have come at a worse time for the NFL prospect.
things get worse for state
As I have covered previously Jeff Lebby’s new look Mississippi State haven’t got off to a fast start. Arguably, they haven’t started at all. A sole victory over Eastern Kentucky in week one has them 1-3 going into this weekend’s visit to Austin to face Texas. This has not impressed Bulldog fans.
However, worse news was to come for Hail State fans when it was confirmed that QB1 Blake Shapen is out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.
Shapen is a senior who transferred from Baylor to lead Lebby’s new look offense. However, he injured his shoulder in the fourth quarter of the defeat to Florida last Saturday.
“we’re all hurting for Blake after this unfortunate news” said Lebby after the Florida game. “Blake is the ultimate competitor and teammate and an unquestioned leader in this program. I know he will work incredibly hard to come back stronger than ever and he will continue to serve as a team leader from the sidelines”, continued Lebby.
True freshman Michael Van Buren Jr is expected to make his first start at quarterback in Austin. Van Buren was recruited by Lebby when he was at Oklahoma, however, he committed to Oregon. When Lebby moved to Starkville, Van Buren decommitted from the Ducks and subsequently confirmed he would sign with the Bulldogs.
Razorbacks & Aggies say farewell to AT&T
Jerry World, Arlington, TX
The University of Arkansas and Texas A&M have faced off against each other every year since 2009 at AT&T stadium in Dallas.
In a deal agreed back in 2008, both schools signed up to a then 10-year deal to play annual games at a neutral site.
With Jerry Jones being perhaps the Razorbacks best known Alum, the Dallas Cowboys owner was keen to bag a high profile college game when AT&T opened back in 2009. Arkansas wanted to raise it’s profile in the Texas recruiting area and both schools already had a historical rivalry. The game and its venue made sense with a ten-year deal penned in 2008. When A&M joined the SEC in 2012 the agreement was extended through 2024 meaning this is the final year of playing this game at AT&T.
Neutral site games are often controversial – just ask Georgia head coach Kirby Smart about his thoughts on playing in Jacksonville – and Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman has long campaigned to get the game back on campus. Well, from next season, the game will return to true home and road fixtures.
But, not everyoe is happy to see the end of the game in Arlington. Texas A&M head coach, Mike Elko has coached in this game over the years and has always been a strong supporter of the game. Talking on Wednesday Elko spoke of his time on the sidelines inside AT&T.
“I understand why we’re bringing it back on campus. But I do think it’s been a cool game. I think it’s a cool setting. I think it’s a cool venue, I said in my press conference on Monday. I actually grew up a cowboy fan. And so, yeah, I think this this one’s just a cool environment”.
its bama v Georgia!
Tuscaloosa, AL
It has arrived! Game of the week, month, season, century – its Georgia v Alabama!
This is an intriguing game on many levels. It is true that defeat for either side no longer ends their playoff chances, or indeed a shot at the SEC Championship. But, there is a lot at stake in this game. Whether either coach cares or even listens to outside noise, criticism will escalate quickly with a defeat.
Firstly, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, who has a 1-8 record against Alabama, certainly under Nick Saban’s leadership, needs the monkey off his back. Defeat here starts talk of an Alabama curse rather than a Saban one.
Defeat for Alabama opens the door to criticism that DeBoer doesn’t know how to coach in the SEC and is out of his depth.
Both of these headlines will be gross overreactions, but both sets of fans for these teams are no strangers to overreactions.
If there isn’t enough attention on this game, fans have been asked to arrive early to the game to get through heavy security – with speculation that former president Donald Trump will be in attendance. If that wasn’t enough, College Gameday will be on campus with ex-Alabama head coach Nick Saban, now safely instituted on the set of the popular pregame show. There have also been some wild rumours of who Gameday’s guest picker is going to be ranging from Ms Terry, to Donald Trump to Jelly Roll! On Friday, Gameday Instagram confirmed that in fact Ms Terry will be the guest picker. This should be very entertaining!
The spread is tight (and moving by the hour) with Georgia 1.5 point favourites as I write. This sums up the situation – so early in the season the experts just aren’t sure what to make of early season form. The over/under is at 49.5 points which has come down a little from opening at 53.5.
Gameday starts at 9am ET (2pm UK time) with the game kicking off at 7.30pm ET (12.30am UK).
It’s going to be quite a day!
kiffin throws shade
Oxford, ms
The news of UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka electing to redshirt and sit out the rest of the season was fresh in everyones minds when the SEC head coaches teleconference came around on Wednesday.
No surprise then that a theme emerged in questions directed at the coaches.
When Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze was asked about NIL and the transfer portal, Freeze elected to compliment the Ole Miss program in the way that they manage their NIL collective so effectively.
On the very next segment a media member relayed these compliments to Ole Miss head coach, Lane Kiffin. Kiffin is never short of words but, lets be clear, he absolutely knows how his words will land, said this
“That’s nice of him. I’m sure he’ll try to steal Walker Jones (head of the Grove Collective) like he did all our coaches.”
Which wasn’t said in a humorous fashion (although sometimes it is hard to tell with Lane). It also followed on from Kiffin’s comments made in the aftermath of Auburn’s defeat to Arkansas last weekend. Freeze heavily criticised both of his quarterbacks (both of whom he has benched over the last few weeks) leading to widespread criticism of the head coach’s lack of support. When asked about the pressure players and coaches find themselves under, Kiffin had this to say:
“I think it pays off when you have the relationships and the quarterbacks trust you too… I go back to Matt Corrall when he threw 6 interceptions & before he even got to the media and sitting down with him, “you know i’ve got to do a better job of calling plays, we’ve got to coach better and don’t worry we got your back” and so I think it goes a long ways & goes a long ways with kids in recruiting, knowing what they’re going to get. They get here with a relationship where they can trust us”.
Which, while not a direct attack on Freeze, was very much aimed in the Auburn coach’s direction. So where does this beef come from? If you listen to or read work from Auburn beat writers, they will say it comes from the point that previous Auburn head coach, Brian Harsin was fired. Per reports, Kiffin saw the Auburn job and the huge amounts of NIL money available as one that he could take to a National Championship. We know that the story of Kiffin’s attraction to the job was leaked before he accepted. As rumours go Kiffin had not had the chance to speak with his family about the move and they wanted to stay in Oxford. The deal collapsed and Freeze got the job.
While this might sound like sour grapes, the beat writers are convinced that Kiffin still harbours a grudge. I’m not so sure but it’s for certain that Kiffin isn’t pulling any punches.
Perhaps, with Auburn’s poor form and Freeze’s rambling at times, and some bizarre coaching decisions, Kiffin smells blood in the water. Perhaps.
The "Families" Meet
Nashville, TN
Like all good mafia movies there is a point when all of the families meet for a “sit-down”.
Well this week, Yahoo Sports Ross Dellenger reported that the athletic directors of the SEC and BIG10 – the two biggest and financially strong – are expected to meet collectively in Nashville in an historic meeting of both conferences.
Meetings between only these two conferences have been few and far between but come as an extension of the SEC and BIG10 setting up a joint board earlier this year.
Per Dellenger, the Athletic directors are expected “to begin discussion about a range of topics that they have mostly, so far, kept within their individual leagues. Those topics include the House settlement case, a new third-party (not NCAA) enforcement model, the future of the College Football Playoff format and — most noteworthy of them all — a regular-season and postseason scheduling arrangement”.
This marks a thawing of the relationship between two conferences who historically have not seen eye-to-eye.
Conference commissioners, Greg Sankey and Tony Petitti, are both expected to join the AD meeting.
The meeting is expected to happen during October.
stay safe southern friends
The South
As you read this Hurricane Helene will have reached ground on the Florida Gulf Coast and made its way North.
With Tallahassee tracking in the path of the Storm, Florida State University has elected to close the campus, the University of Florida is closing down the campus on Thursday & Friday. While this is sure to have an impact on team’s preparations and fans travelling plans, these are secondary and minor to the safety of the people in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina who are in the projected path of the Hurricane.
We will watch from afar, thankful that we, in Europe, don’t have to experience such extreme weather conditions. Our thoughts are with those who suffer pain and damage at the hands of Mother Nature.
Stay safe friends.
