Bills vs Lions: Three Things to Watch on Thursday Night Football

The NFL does not hang around, and neither do the Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills. Both teams enter Thursday Night Football at 1-0 after dramatic victories in Week 1, but neither looked entirely convincing for the full 60 minutes.

For Buffalo, the 36-31 win over Houston was another example of Josh Allen finding a way when his team needed him most. Detroit, meanwhile, had to survive an almighty second-half collapse before beating New Orleans 31-30 in overtime.

Now they meet in a game that has plenty of intrigue beyond the fact that both sides are unbeaten.

It is also a landmark occasion for Buffalo, with the Lions providing the opposition for the first regular-season game at the Bills’ new Highmark Stadium. With such a high profile game kicking off Week 2, here are three things to look out for:

Can Detroit's secondary contain Josh Allen?

There might not be a more obvious individual matchup heading into Thursday night.

Josh Allen looked every inch the superstar in Buffalo’s opener, accounting for 357 total yards and four touchdowns against the Texans. Two of those scores came through the air, while his ability to make plays with his legs remains one of the biggest problems any defense has to solve.

Detroit’s secondary could therefore be facing a very long evening.

The Lions allowed 410 passing yards to New Orleans in Week 1, although it would be harsh to judge the unit entirely on that number given the circumstances of the game. There are also some genuine concerns about depth in the secondary, with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph beginning the season on the PUP list.

Allen will also have some new toys to work with. DJ Moore made an immediate impact on his Buffalo debut, finishing with five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown, while Dalton Kincaid exploded for 130 receiving yards.

That creates a difficult balancing act for Detroit. Load the box and James Cook can hurt you. Sit back and give Allen time, and he has more than enough weapons to pick you apart. The Lions’ pass rush will need to make life uncomfortable for Allen without constantly leaving their secondary exposed; If they cannot, Buffalo’s quarterback could quickly become the difference-maker.

Jahmyr Gibbs: Detroit's not so secret weapon

If there is one player capable of taking some of the pressure off Jared Goff, it is Jahmyr Gibbs.

The Lions’ running back was outstanding against New Orleans, carrying the ball 29 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 30 yards on five receptions. Detroit increasingly leaned on Gibbs as the game developed, and he ultimately played a huge role in getting them over the line in overtime.

That could be particularly important against Buffalo.

The Bills allowed Houston to run for 124 yards in Week 1, and although that is hardly an alarming figure on its own, Detroit has a much more explosive threat in Gibbs. And it’s a good job too, as Isiah Pacheco’s extended absence means Gibbs’ workload is likely to remain significant.

There is another reason Detroit will want to establish the run: keeping Allen and Buffalo’s offense on the sideline.

The Lions held the ball for 36:51 against New Orleans and ran 33 times, with Gibbs accounting for the overwhelming majority of that workload. It is a formula that allows Detroit to control the clock while also creating opportunities for Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams when defenses begin to creep towards the line of scrimmage.

Gibbs does not need another 150-yard performance for Detroit to have a chance. But if he can consistently find room against Buffalo’s front, the Lions can make this a very uncomfortable night for the home team.

The new Highmark Stadium gets its first real test

There is something slightly different about Thursday night’s game before either offense has even taken the field.

Buffalo’s new home is finally getting its regular-season debut.

The Bills opened their 2026 campaign on the road in Houston, meaning Detroit will be the first visiting team to experience the new Highmark Stadium in a competitive game. The new venue holds 60,108 fans and replaces the Bills’ previous home just across the road.

That should make for quite an atmosphere. And Buffalo will want to give its new home something to celebrate.

The Bills’ Week 1 victory was not particularly comfortable. Houston put 31 points on the board and repeatedly challenged Buffalo’s defense, but Allen delivered when it mattered most, leading a seven-play, 96-yard game-winning drive before the Bills’ defense finally closed the door with a late sack and strip-sack.

Detroit knows all about close games after its own escape against the Saints, and this feels like another matchup that could come down to the final possessions.

There is also a fascinating contrast in styles. Buffalo produced 409 yards at 7.9 yards per play in Week 1, while Detroit’s approach was more methodical, with the Lions using Gibbs heavily and controlling possession.

If the Bills can start quickly, the new stadium could become a weapon in itself. But If Detroit can keep the crowd quiet and turn this into another late-game slugfest, the visitors have more than enough firepower to spoil Buffalo’s party.
