Monday Night Football Preview: Can the Commanders derail the 49ers’ perfect start?
By Simon Carroll
The San Francisco 49ers welcome the Washington Commanders to Levi’s Stadium for a Week 6 Monday Night Football showdown, with Brock Purdy and company looking to make it six wins from six. Can Jayden Daniels deliver a statement performance and spoil the party?
There are plenty of reasons to tune in for Monday night’s clash between the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers. One team is flying high at 5-0, while the other is desperate to turn its season around after a frustrating start.
San Francisco has looked like a genuine contender through the opening weeks, but Washington has the sort of playmakers who can make life uncomfortable for any opponent. With Daniels back under center and the 49ers dealing with injuries to key offensive weapons, there are intriguing matchups all over the field.
The 49ers enter as clear favorites, but after Washington’s dramatic 27-27 tie with the New York Giants, Dan Quinn’s team will be eager to put things right in primetime.
Can Jayden Daniels exploit the 49ers’ defense?
Washington’s hopes begin and end with its young quarterback. Daniels returned from a dislocated elbow against the Giants and showed flashes of the dynamic playmaking that makes him so dangerous, even if the Commanders ultimately failed to finish the job.
His ability to extend plays, escape pressure and hurt defenses with his legs gives Washington a potential route to an upset. However, the offensive line will need to improve considerably after surrendering five sacks against New York.
That is a particularly concerning problem ahead of a meeting with a San Francisco defense capable of generating pressure and forcing quarterbacks into uncomfortable decisions. If the 49ers can keep Daniels contained in the pocket, they could make Washington’s offense one-dimensional.
The Commanders will need to find ways to get the ball out quickly, establish their running game and give Daniels opportunities to attack downfield without asking him to do everything himself.
Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey lead San Francisco’s charge

The 49ers have started the season 5-0, and their ability to keep producing despite injuries has been one of the defining features of their campaign.
Purdy has helped keep Kyle Shanahan’s offense ticking, while Christian McCaffrey remains a central figure in the passing and running games. Washington must find a way to limit McCaffrey’s influence, because allowing San Francisco to dictate the tempo could make for a long evening.
There are, however, reasons to believe the Commanders can make this competitive. San Francisco has been dealing with injuries across its receiving corps, including Deebo Samuel, while Mike Evans has also had fitness concerns. That could place additional responsibility on the remaining receivers and McCaffrey to generate explosive plays.
Washington’s run defense has shown promise, so forcing the 49ers into obvious passing situations could be important. The challenge is that San Francisco has been particularly effective on third down, meaning the Commanders cannot afford to repeatedly allow manageable situations.
If Washington can make the 49ers work for every yard, the pressure could shift onto Purdy to deliver when it matters most.

The Commanders’ tie with the Giants felt like a defeat. Washington surrendered a 14-point fourth-quarter lead before a chaotic overtime ended with a missed opportunity to attempt a game-winning field goal.
Quinn accepted responsibility for the clock-management error, but the bigger concern is whether the team can respond with greater composure when the game is on the line.
Against an undefeated opponent on the road, Washington cannot afford to waste scoring opportunities or give away possessions. The 49ers have shown they can capitalise when opponents make mistakes, and a short field could be all they need to swing momentum.
For the Commanders, this is an opportunity to demonstrate that the disappointment in Week 5 can become a turning point rather than another setback. Daniels, Terry McLaurin and the rest of the offense have enough talent to trouble San Francisco, but they need four quarters of execution.

There is plenty to consider ahead of Monday night, from San Francisco’s unbeaten record to Daniels’ ability to make plays with his arm and legs.
A matchup like this offers several potential talking points for a Bet Builder, including the game’s scoring, quarterback production and the contributions of key offensive players. San Francisco’s strong start makes it an obvious team to watch, but Washington’s playmaking ability means this could be more competitive than the records suggest.

The Verdict
San Francisco has earned its status as the favorite, and the combination of Purdy, McCaffrey and Shanahan’s offensive system gives the 49ers plenty of ways to attack Washington.
The Commanders have the talent to make things interesting, particularly if Daniels can avoid the pass rush and turn broken plays into big gains. But Washington’s defensive vulnerabilities and recent struggles in key moments make this a difficult assignment.
The Commanders should have enough firepower to land a few punches, but the 49ers’ balance, confidence and ability to convert on third down make them the team to back to extend their perfect start.
