- Embraces contact. Looks to finish every run with physicality, driving feet & maximising yardage
- Plays with an extraordinarily low pad level for his height – a nightmare to tackle
- Excellent contact balance; defenders just bounce off him or get run over
- Sees the field behind the LOS, identifying opportunities to attack pre-snap
- Demonstrates good timing to attack developing lanes, and can plant his foot and go
- Underutilised in the passing game but is a safe pair of hands out of the backfield
Con's:
- Lack of top end speed; not going to run away from defenders
- Long strider with limited short-area agility, although surprising elusiveness for a bigger back
- Ball security a concern – eight fumbles during his time at College Station
- NFL longevity could be an issue after logging more than 600 touches in his college career
The Verdict:
“The best way to describe Isaiah Spiller would be ‘a bruiser with finesse’. Whilst it’s easy to presume the big, brawny back is just a hammer who imposes his will on a defense, that does a disservice to the football IQ he demonstrates behind the line of scrimmage. His ability to set up defenders and create cutback lanes should not be disregarded, and despite his lack of top-end speed he has all the hallmarks of a three-down NFL running back. His style of play allows him to grow into games and get more yardage as the opponent tires, and scouts will be intrigued by the almost bonus value he could provide as a pass-catcher. His draft stock will only be limited by the position he plays and the workload he’s already been subject to, but make no mistake about it - Spiller will make an impression at the next level.”
