- Good size to his frame. Dense – looks to be able to take some punishment
- Explosive – up to top speed almost instantaneously
- Excellent short-area agility; loses no speed when changing direction
- Devastating juke move leaves tacklers stranded
- Anticipates meeting points and has the quick processing to alter course to avoid it
- Impressive long speed, rarely tackled from behind
- Finishes runs with some pop on contact
Con's:
- High pad level. Struggles with leverage and fails to get noticeable YAC as a result
- Sometimes too keen to bounce lanes in the backfield instead of getting north when needed
- Small sample size; just over 100 carries at South Carolina. Unknown commodity
- Versatile weapon, but a noticeably awkward pass catcher with too many drops on tape
- Lack of anchor as a pass blocker, another consequence of his heightened pad level
The Verdict:
“One of the more intriguing running back prospects in this draft class, Quan White played linebacker at Florida State before one year at JUCO saw him transfer to Columbia. A re-born running back, White wasn’t given anything close to a significant workload with the Gamecocks, with just 124 touches over 18 games. That means he enters the NFL with the cliche ‘plenty of tread left on his tyres’, but it will also have scouts wondering if they can trust the tape. On film, White is an athletic rarity; he has the size, fluidity and change of direction speed to embarrass defenders and plenty of burst to leave guys in his wake. I’d argue his shortcomings are correctable with more coaching and gametime, and as a piece that can be moved round the formation and likely has special teams ability too, he’s well worth a day three pick.”
