2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Tyquan Thornton

Film Watched: Oklahoma State 2021, West Virginia 2019, Oklahoma 2019

Pro's:

  • Tall receiver with good length and big catch radius
  • Elite speed. Commands deeper cushions from defensive backs with his vertical threat
  • Explosive burst off the line of scrimmage that puts press/man coverage in a bind
  • Excels in the deep field on go routes or posts/corners
  • Excellent hands. Can reel them in outside of his body, and high point the football in traffic
  • Demonstrates good subtle adjustments to change route direction to accommodate flight path
  • Excellent positional awareness. Knows where the boundary is when coming down with the ball
  • Shows consistent toughness through contact

Con's:

  • Tall and lean, with little in the way of muscle mass. Needs to get some weight on him!
  • High cut with limited hip flexion, demonstrated in his lethargic cuts on quick developing routes
  • Brought down with just modest tackling effort
  • Dedicated to being competitive physically, but doesn’t have the play strength. Blocking a problem
  • Small hands. Smaller than Kenny Pickett’s! But never had a problem with drops at Baylor

The Verdict:

“Tyquan Thornton was already making a name for himself in the pre-draft process before he wowed onlookers with a 4.28 second forty yard dash at the combine. Really, nobody should be surprised; the testing was always where Thornton would excel, demonstrating his linear speed to full effectiveness. That being said, it’s also telling he avoided any agility drills or the bench press. Thornton is a north-south receiver with a lanky frame that is going to stress defenses deep. Likely to struggle against press coverage, defenses will be very handsy with him at the line of scrimmage, and he’ll have to learn fast how to overcome the attention. As a perimeter receiver only he should hope to find a backup spot that sees the field in five-wide alignments on obvious passing downs, and let his ridiculous acceleration do the talking. As far as day three picks go, he should be productive early.”
