2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Josh Johnson

Film Watched: South Florida 2020, Oklahoma State 2020

Pro's:

  • Chain mover. Finds ways to create yardage every time he’s targeted
  • Uncanny ability to uncover in congested areas, reel in the pass and know where the sticks are
  • Intuitive versus zone coverage. Finds the soft spots to sit and be an outlet
  • Phenomenal toughness on congested catches for an undersized receiver
  • Displays good vertical agility; able to climb the ladder and high point the football
  • Has the long speed to take it to the house if the field opens for him
  • Showed up against the toughest opponents on the schedule (Ohio State, Memphis)
  • Insane leap in production as a senior, more than doubling his yardage from the year before

Con's:

  • Undersized. Needs a dedicated weight room regimen to improve core strength
  • Suffers from bouts of lack of confidence, & goes through spells of concentration drops
  • Lack of height and wingspan will make him a slot only receiver at the next level, despite speed
  • Bends his route running rather than separating with crisp cuts in and out of his breaks
  • Trouble maintaining route discipline when tracking balls over the shoulder

The Verdict:

“Josh Johnson has been on my radar for the past nine months after exploding in his final season at Tulsa. Boasting deceptive quicks and an impressive top speed, Johnson can be a major headache when he is given the opportunity to stretch his legs, but for The Golden Hurricanes was used more at the intermediate level of the field, uncovering on late developing crossers - a job he did very well. He’s a slot guy at the next level who plays bigger than he is and knows how to keep the offense on the field, but always in the back of your mind you’re ready for him to break a special play off, and it’s something defenses will have to respect. There’s plenty to clean up, but no real deal-breaking deficiency that precludes him from having a professional career. Impressive at the recent Shrine Bowl, Johnson’s ceiling as a WR3 might take some time to reach, but he has it in his locker.”
