Pro's:

  • A true beast. A mountain of a man whose size is matched by his scary levels of aggression
  • Truly dominant core strength; disposes of people with ease with his long, powerful arms
  • Good knee bend into contact that allows him to drive through with his legs
  • Plenty of sand in his pants, and is barely moved when rushers try to beat him with power
  • All kinds of nasty – loves nothing more than burying opponents into the ground
  • Remarkable athleticism for a man his size; ran a 5.02 second forty yard dash at the combine
  • Has enough lateral mobility to get enough depth on his pass sets
  • Surprising change of direction speed to accommodate counters and double moves

Con's:

  • A wild animal that needs to be tamed – savvy defenders will use his aggression against him
  • Overeager at the snap, and too many false starts on his resume
  • Moments of imbalance as he careens across the turf, leaning forward, his body over his toes
  • Dismisses technique in favour of brute strength – feet all over the place coming out of his stance
  • Hand timing and placement inconsistent
  • Unnecessary holding penalties where his will to punish trumps winning the rep

The Verdict:

“Woah. Tyler Smith is something else! An angry man in a huge body, Smith was built to move people against their will, and takes great pleasure in doing so. The sheer power he possesses makes him a real mauler in the run game, and someone who will not be beaten physically in pass protection. What makes Smith a truly intriguing prospect is that he has sufficient mobility to be able to compete with speed rushers, and he stands to get even more dominant if he’s able to add a little composure to his game and clean up a myriad of technique issues. Some teams may see him primarily as a guard, but with the length he brings to the league I’d argue he is tested at right tackle first - Smith’s size and versatility will see him drafted early on day two.”
