- Height makes it difficult for him to play with leverage, forcing him to bend at the waist often
- Rushers have enjoyed more success when he’s not got his balance correct
- Quicker vertically than he is laterally, might be exposed against faster pass rushers
- Aggression can be used against him, encouraging him to overset and attack his inside
- Change of direction a little tardy and can struggle to mirror opponents who have sharp counter moves
The Verdict:
“Trevor Penning is a bit of an animal, and in a good way. Physically imposing with an aggressive streak that intimidates his opponents, Penning is big, long, powerful and quick enough to control any opponent he faced at the FCS level. Any concerns he might struggle against better competition were pretty much eliminated in the pre-draft process as he excelled at the Senior Bowl and showed out at the NFL Combine. For me, Penning hits the league as an immediate starter as a right tackle, with every chance of making the switch to the blindside - if anything, coaches might want to finesse his game and rein him in a little, harnessing that aggression to make sure he doesn’t get exposed. But in terms of traits and measurables, Penning has the lot. He’s without doubt a first round draft pick.”
