2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Burford_Spencer

Film Watched: Illinois 2021, Western Kentucky 2021, Senior Bowl

Pro's:

  • True positional versatility; played both left guard and left tackle to a high level at UTSA
  • Wide frame that suggests it can carry more functional weight
  • Smooth and quick; impressive range as a blocker who can reach any landmark required
  • Pulling, screens, lead blocking downfield all well within his capabilities
  • Good leg drive through contact – keeps churning to generate movement off the football
  • Springy feet – plays on his toes and anticipates pass rush moves and vulnerabilities
  • Excellent length: 34.75” arms that give him good reach in the run game & wingspan in pass pro
  • Surprisingly stout versus power and willing to sink his hips, dig his heels in and absorb contact

Con's:

  • Lightweight; straddles the 300lb mark and needs to add more mass to improve power
  • Physical competitiveness going to be challenged at the next level
  • Some evident technique issues; inconsistent hand placement and timing can be cleaned up
  • Plays a little upright, and a more consistent lower pad level would bring better movement at the point of attack
  • Subpar arm and hand strength – can be shedded on sustained blocks and beaten at full extension by speed rushers

The Verdict:

“If athleticism and length are what you look for in an offensive lineman, then Spencer Burford will be somewhere near the top of your wishlist; agile and committed at the point of engagement, Burford uses clever angles and good timing to get on the offensive through contact, and when he gets to open his legs and block outside the hashes he’s capable of widening lanes for his running back. Quick enough in pass protection, Burford played the blindside his final two years for the Roadrunners, culminating in one of the best seasons in UTSA history in 2021. Burford is in desperate need of adding more weight ahead of his entry to the NFL; more functional play strength would cure a lot of niggling issues to his game. A slow start to his professional career may be on the cards, but a ceiling of a starting left tackle is a real possibility.”
