2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Pro's:

  • Nearly 35” arms
  • Very powerful bull rush – Powerful hands in general
  • Motor is always running hot – He knows he can’t run down Devon Achane, but that wouldn’t stop him from trying
  • Consistent play throughout 4 years, even when the role increased
  • Elite ability to stack and shed blocks

Con's:

  • Not very explosive laterally
  • Only wins with the bull rush – shows the use of other moves, just isn’t explosive enough to win with them
  • Didn’t improve much throughout his career

The Verdict:

“Phidarian Mathis is a prototypical two gapping DT. He wins with his powerful hands and very strong lower body. He plays with great leverage against the run, double teams can have a tough time driving him off the ball. Mathis plays with great technique, as you probably should after spending basically half a decade being coached by Nick Saban. He will be able to give DT needy teams good reps from day one, but the ceiling is too low to consider him a high round draft pick.”
