Film Watched: App State 2021, Texas 2021 App State 2021 (SB CCG)

Pro's:

  • Fast. Has excellent range manning the deep field, and was often used as a single high safety at Louisiana
  • Quick processor to diagnose the action and trigger to his destination
  • Explosive burst to reach catch points in front of him, or come downfield and meet the run
  • Has the quicks and short area movement to match receivers in man coverage
  • Pass breakup artist, with physicality at the catch to disturb opponents hands and dislodge the ball
  • Uses speed to careen into tackles
  • Targets the football through tackles – five forced fumbles in his collegiate career
  • Special teams prowess could command a roster spot on it’s own merit

Con's:

  • Lightweight. Fails to bring the desired play strength unless launching his whole body into contact
  • Might get bullied in slot or nickel duties when manning up against big slots or tight ends
  • Suspect tackling technique – likely a result of him trying to add more juice to his hits
  • Modest length & arms have less than desired steel in them – arm tackles frequently broken
  • Some plays don’t display the urgency to be around the action when aligned deep

The Verdict:

“An agile and active safety, Percy Butler has a varied skillset that should let him find a home at the next level. Bouncy and eager when aligning deep, Butler shows good burst to attack the action in front of him, and more than enough lateral quickness to patrol the back end as a free safety. Butler also flashes physicality, but his frame lacks weight and his play strength betrays him at contact - often making his tackling a liability. Despite that, Butler gives everything he’s got in his hits and has an eye for a turnover too. This demeanour and speed has shown up on special teams, where as a downfield gunner he excelled for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Butler doesn’t possess the size to be a starter, but has enough of an offering to fight for a roster spot.”
