2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

STARKVILLE, MS - JULY 23, 2020 - Mississippi State Cornerback Martin Emerson (#1) headshot taken during 2020 Football Production Days in the Palmeiro Center at Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS. Photo By Mitch Phillips

Film Watched: Alabama 2021, LSU 2021, Memphis 2021

Pro's:

  • Long, lean cornerback with the perfect measurements for an outside NFL cornerback
  • Imposes himself on receivers at the line of scrimmage. Length delays opponents’ entry into their route stem
  • Will cause a fuss at the catch point, with limbs invading a receivers’ catch radius
  • Swats balls out of the air for fun – eleven passes defended in his sophomore season alone
  • Determined to affect a receiver throughout his route
  • Able to click and close well coming downfield to the football
  • Shows good eye discipline to keep all areas of interest under surveillance in zone coverage
  • Uses his body and play strength to marshall receivers closer to the sideline than desired

Con's:

  • Not averse to taking risks; sometimes baits the QB giving a healthy cushion to the receiver
  • Stiff-hipped and struggles to mirror through route breaks and minimise separation
  • Doesn’t have the long speed to escort deep field threats the full distance
  • Grabby when losing a rep. Will attract the attention of the referees in the NFL
  • Not a takeaway artist. Just one pick in three years at Mississippi State despite his length
  • Need to see more enthusiasm in run defense

The Verdict:

“Martin Emerson looks like one of those toolsy day three corners that has holes in his game and requires some polish, but ultimately develops into a proficient outside NFL cornerback. Possessing the ideal measurables to earn a professional paycheck, Emerson knows how to locate the football and stop it from arriving at it’s destination. Emerson’s change of direction speed is a concern but can be masked by finding him a home in a predominantly zone coverage scheme, where he can fire downhill and undercut routes or make plays at the catch point. If a coaching staff is able to get him a little more focused on adding other duties to his repertoire - including special teams contributions - then Emerson will make a roster and enjoy a growing role on a defense as he matures.”
