- A mauler when he gets his hands inside; loves the battle and will finish each play
- Never misses an opportunity to put an opponent on the turf
- Incredible length – and very happy to use it. Heavy arms with violent hands and plays at full extension
- Wingspan makes it very difficult for rushers to circumnavigate him
- Engulfs defenders who then find it hard to shake his attention and scrape to the ball
Con's:
- Over-reliant on length at the expense of his technique
- Waist bender who plays with zero leverage and dilutes his power potential
- Doesn’t care where his hands land – routinely fighting outside his opponents arms
- Grab happy and will be a flag magnet in the NFL
- Footwork all over the place; Body balance precarious as a result
- Skinnier lower half & inability to sink hips makes his anchor surprisingly vulnerable
The Verdict:
“Marquis Hayes has the measurables to ensure he gets a second look from scouts, but his tape is a frustrating watch. As a three year starter for Oklahoma, Hayes has shown little in the way of developing his fundamentals during his time in Norman, which is a shame because he could be a devastatingly effective run blocker if he wanted to be. A rusty mover who won’t wow you with his agility, Hayes is already battling the laws of physics with his pad height and pass sets, but to waste his length and size with poor hand usage and footwork is almost criminal. Hayes has no business being on an NFL field until a coaching staff sees some growth out of him, but considering he’s likely to go undrafted there’s no risk bringing him in and seeing if they can work a miracle - the rewards would be obvious.”
