2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Ray_LaBryan_76

Film Watched: Auburn 2021, Ole Miss 2021, Notre Dame 2020

Pro's:

  • Big defensive lineman with healthy weight and the ability to add more muscle mass to his frame
  • Impressive anchor; bread and butter is swallowing up blockers and letting his teammates eat
  • Can take on double teams and thrive
  • Strong arms and heavy hands with good length – dictates terms at the point of contact
  • Ragdolls single blocks; able to stack and shed at will and can two gap comfortably
  • Engagement is maintained until he decides otherwise – hands always in control
  • Able to set the edge on an odd front

Con's:

  • Stiff. VERY stiff. Poor lateral movement means anything outside a 3-tech is unfeasible
  • Quick blockers who can reset the LOS and get inside his arms will cause him problems
  • Crushes the pocket but doesn’t penetrate it – only one season with more than one sack
  • Struggles against zone blocking schemes where opponents can expose his speed and attack his hip
  • Struggles to keep his pads low, and doesn’t employ leverage to complement his power through contact
  • Injury prone, with four out of five seasons ended by injury at Tuscaloosa

The Verdict:

“Sheer force is the blunt instrument that LaBryan Ray employs to win, and in fairness to the big ‘Bama bulldozer it’s been mightily effective in his collegiate career. Ray might tip the scales at a shade under 300lbs but he has the play strength of a man 30lbs heavier, and even double teams find it difficult to compromise his gap integrity. Ray’s role at Alabama was varied, but ultimately his job was to occupy attention and let his teammates take advantage, and as such stats were never going to be his strong suit. He’s not quite got the size to play nose, but as an effective early down edge setter in a three man front there is definite value there. Unfortunately, his lack of movement reduces his use in any other situation to negligible, and his one-dimensional skillset will see his draft stock kept to a late day value.”
