2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

BU_FB_Woods_JT_2021

Film Watched: Oklahoma 2021, BYU 2021, Oklahoma State 2021 (B12 CCG)

Pro's:

  • Electric speed. Able to cover the complete field from the deepest alignment
  • Excellent burst, attacking the football from his landmark in an instant
  • Height and ridiculous arm length allows him to thwart the reception at the catch point
  • Agility matches speed – can mirror routes against the shiftiest receivers with ease
  • Ultra smooth mover and concedes no separation through his transitions
  • Turnover machine; 4 fumble recoveries & 8 interceptions – all 8 picks in his final two years at Baylor
  • Hits hard when the play is there to be made
  • Added some needed run defense nous at the LOS as a senior – 4.5 TFL’s in 2021

Con's:

  • Tall frame that could do with some more muscle mass on it to endure the rigours of the NFL
  • Subpar play strength notable in his tackling – lets some bigger ball carriers get away after contact
  • Lack of anticipation as a single-high safety has challenged his athleticism to get to the play on time
  • Route combos seem to test his mental processing – needs a little more conviction in his decision making
  • Want to see more desire to come down against the run and destroy running backs as they break through the linebackers

The Verdict:

“A really intriguing prospect who has flown under the radar until he turned heads at the combine, JT Woods has a rare athletic skillset that will eventually allow him to play as a single-high safety at the next level. Woods brings all the speed and burst for a deep, free safety role, but is still developing his instincts at the position; whilst his quicks have gotten him out of jail at Baylor, hesitation before heading to the catch point will expose him at the next level. When Woods does crash the party he’s got game-changing ability, and his length is a real asset when attempting to take the ball away. You want a little more alpha-dog about him, and a role near the LOS is probably not wise. But in a class full of box safeties Woods differentiates himself from the crowd, and there’s upside to be had as an early day three pick.”
