2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Thompson_Josh_sss_Texas00380

Pro's:

  • Attended the best university in the United States of America
  • Very experienced – played large roles in parts of 5 seasons
  • Was on Tom Herman’s “leadership council” and was admired for his maturity
  • Was able to keep a starting job throughout five years, even with 3 different defensive coordinators
  • Flashed very good speed at the combine (4.40)
  • Incredibly physical tackler – it doesn’t matter who the ball carrier is, Thompson wants to pop them

Con's:

  • Was a key starting piece on a defense that was 99th/130 in points per game allowed
  • Was a key starting piece in a secondary that allowed the 62nd/130 most passing yards per game
  • Was asked to play 8-10 yards off WRs a majority of snaps as a RsSr, basically not allowing for much ball production
  • Has a knack for biting on double moves
  • Footwork and hip fluidity leaves a lot to be desired
  • Will likely have to make a move to safety to catch on in the NFL

The Verdict:

“Josh Thompson was a fan favorite amongst Longhorn fanatics, mainly for his leadership and consistency on the field over five years. As a RsSr he was asked to play off-cover 3 a majority of snaps, not allowing him to use his physicality to work over receivers. Thompson wins with being physical and possessing decent athleticism. If he can improve his hip flexibility and his footwork, Thompson could find himself in a slot CB role on the next level, allowing him to get physical with smaller WRs, or even TEs. Playing him in the slot will allow him to do what he’s best at as well, stopping the run. Thompson doesn’t have the tools or ball production to be considered a high round pick, but he does have some real upside on day 3.”
