2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Film Watched: Michigan 2021, Penn State 2021, Notre Dame 2021

Pro's:

  • Dependable middle linebacker with good instincts to know what’s coming his way
  • Read his keys well, diagnosing blocking schemes and an offense’s intention pre-snap
  • Excels with his gap fits, greeting the ball carrier as they head through the line of scrimmage
  • Good fundamentals on contact; arrives low and with leverage, and excellent hand placement & timing
  • Technically proficient shedding from blocks
  • Tidy tackler, particularly impressive when embracing downhill attacks one-on-one in space
  • Motor always runs hot; won’t stop chasing down the football until the play is dead
  • More of a backfield threat in 2021, with 16 tackles for a loss and 5 sacks

Con's:

  • Athletic profile restricts his range and coverage ability
  • Stiff-hipped, and can be left grasping when facing shifty ball carriers with sharp cuts
  • Not a liability in pass protection, but best tasked with just shallow zone coverage
  • Doesn’t have the quicks to match up with running backs in man coverage
  • Game-changing plays a result of playing alongside elite talent rather than his own ability?

The Verdict:

“Jack Sanborn might not stand out with his measurables, or in his athletic testing, but he’s a natural middle linebacker with instincts you just cannot teach. Sanborn matches his on-field intelligence with application and physicality, and despite not being the biggest linebacker is rarely overpowered or outmatched with strength. Excelling against the run, Sanborn has shown the ability to shoot gaps, meet ball carriers at the line of scrimmage, and most impressively take on downhill runners in the open field. There’s no doubt that the former Badger lacks some movement skills - you wouldn’t describe him as sideline-to-sideline, and despite having a mental head start won’t be a factor on run plays outside the numbers. But as a high character prospect he offers reliable depth to a linebacker group.”
