2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Plitt

Film Watched: Miami (OH) 2020, San Jose State 2020, NC State 2019

Pro's:

  • Athletic quarterback – has a set of wheels on him and will outrun linebackers to move the chains
  • Very quick feet – nimble enough to climb the pocket and maximise the throwing window
  • Able to freeze rushers with subtle hitches and escape – rarely takes a sack
  • Shrewd in the art of backfield misdirection; disguises handoff/play action well
  • Flashes a big arm, comfortably able to drop a ball over the top of a cornerback down the sideline
  • Comfortable throwing on the move – in fact thrives operating outside of the pocket
  • Helped lead a program from 7 losses as a starter in 2017 to MAC Champions in 2020

Con's:

  • Inconsistent accuracy when throwing at moving targets
  • Distinct lack of touch on passes; short-arms balls to comeback routes, sails when attacking downfield
  • Lack of situational awareness, routinely throwing short of the sticks on third down
  • Elongated windup on release, with ball away from his body for too long before leaving his hand
  • Too many snap miscommunications and ball on the ground before a play has even begun
  • Basic playbook consisting of pre-determined passing plays, lack of decision making with football

The Verdict:

“Drew Plitt deserves a ton of credit for leading an unfancied Ball State football program from winless in the MAC in 2017 to champions of the conference three years later. He’s a competitor who has some desirable traits for the next level, but moreover some significant flaws that will limit interest from the NFL in his services. A lack of accuracy stands to only get worse as a more nuanced playbook is introduced - Plitt operates best where there is less to process and natural instinct is allowed to take over, demonstrated by his improved play outside of the pocket. That ability to string out plays and make things happen might help him as a spot starter in a pinch, but a practice squad QB with the ceiling of a backup is likely in the offing.”
